Freed-Hardeman University anticipates strong enrollment in preparing to welcome students

The streets of Henderson will become more crowded Saturday, Aug. 14, when Freed-Hardeman University students begin returning to campus.
The university expects another strong enrollment this fall, according to Dave Clouse, vice president for community engagement. “We anticipate one of the strongest classes in many years, as FHU continues to buck the enrollment trends around the country,” Clouse said.
“It’s a testament to the desire young people have for a Christian education.”
Students will be able to check-in from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Gardner Center. The traditional Welcome Home activities have been moved to Gano Dining Hall and the Burks Student Center this year, including the community fair and complimentary lunch.
“We have redesigned the check-in process to make it faster and more efficient,” Clouse said.
Since the current COVID risk level stands at Green (based on cases among faculty, staff and students on campus at FHU) the university plans to return to pre-COVID protocols for the fall semester. Classes will return to normal schedules, as will the cafeteria and Lion’s Pride. Social and university events will also return to pre-COVID guidelines.
Masks will be optional, but vaccines are encouraged. Free vaccinations will be available Aug. 20 and other days throughout the semester. In addition, the campus health clinic will continue to provide free testing. Limited space for isolation and quarantine will be available, but vaccinated students will not be required to quarantine in the event they are exposed to the virus.
Classes will begin Wednesday morning, Aug. 18. The annual Tolling of the Bell is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Loyd Auditorium. The event marks the beginning of Freed-Hardeman University’s 152nd year of higher education in Henderson. Two long-time members of the Bible faculty, Dr. Clyde Woods and Dr. Earl Edwards, will be this year’s Masters of the Bell.
