Dr. Justin Rogers, associate professor of biblical studies and director of Freed-Hardeman University Graduate School of Theology, has been elected to serve as the Program Unit Chair for the Philo of Alexandria Seminar of the Society of Biblical Literature.

The Philo Seminar meets annually as part of the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting. Presenters distribute their papers prior to the seminar, where summaries of the research are presented and discussed. Rogers has been elected to serve a three-year term as chair of the Philo Seminar.

Rogers’ current academic research is concentrated in Hellenistic Judaism and its influence on early Christianity. He has written on the Christian reception of Philo of Alexandria, a Hellenized Jew who spanned the Greek and Hebrew cultures in the first century.

“This invitation is a significant marker of Justin’s stature in the organization and a recognition of his contribution to the scholarship in this area,” Mark Blackwelder, dean of the FHU College of Biblical Studies, said.
