Freed-Hardeman University celebrates Homecoming: FHU Lions Basketball get past Hornets on Homecoming

To cap off Homecoming Week, the Lions basketball team (2-0) knocked off former American Midwest Conference foe Harris-Stowe (0-4) 67-61 in a thriller on Saturday afternoon.
After a 4-0 start by the Hornets, the Lions were able to quickly game in the lead after Wanya King knocked down a 3-pointer and Zach Baugher finished a layup to take the early lead.
It was a back-and-forth first half, but the Lions were able to hold the largest lead of the game, going up 25-15 with just under nine minutes go to in the opening 20 minutes.
The Hornets, though, came storming back to take a 30-28 lead with around four minutes left in the first half, and they were able to hold the Lions off, taking a 36-34 lead into the break.
Neither team was able to get anything going early in the second half, but the Hornets were able to lead by as many as seven with 11:26 to go in the contest. That is when the Lions were able to go on the attack, going on a 10-2 run to take a 55-54 lead with just over 8:30 left in the game.
The Lions would hold their lead for the remainder of the game, allowing the Hornets to keep it close, but never letting them have the advantage.
Ryley McClaran led the Lions in scoring with 15 points off the bench and adding six rebounds to his total.
Kortland Martin finished with 13 points, followed by Baugher with 12 and King with 10.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday when they open up the Christian College Classic here at FHU against Florida College.
Game time is set for 5 p.m.
