The Henderson county livestock shows were held this past week in Lexington at First Farmers Coop. Two Chester County 4-H/FFA students competed in the beef cattle show. This show served as a replacement for the canceled Henderson County Fair livestock show. 4-H/FFA students from Chester, Decatur and Henderson counties competed against one another.
Representing Chester County Middle School was fourth grader Bristol Cherry. Bristol took top honors in junior showmanship. This was her first time to win first place in showmanship. She also won first place with her Polled Hereford heifer during the show.
Sydney Cherry, ninth grade student at Chester County High School in 4-H and FFA, won Reserve Grand Champion in the Hereford show. She had two heifers, and they both won their class. These girls have been working hard all summer with their calves. They are responsible for their care daily, which involves feeding, watering and keeping their hair looking groomed. Sydney has stepped up and assumed this responsibility like an adult. Her influence on Bristol is evident at the shows with their work ethic.
These 4-H/FFA projects, such as beef, teach our youth so many valuable life lessons. We are off to a busy start with 4-H here in Chester County with livestock shows wrapping up this weekend. The Cherry sisters will be competing in their last show of 2020 in Decaturville this Saturday. Upcoming events include the first annual Chester County 4-H Fair for the fourth and fifth grade students at CCMS on Oct. 7. Later in the month, we will have our 4-H Chick Chain Show and Sale at First Farmers Coop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22. 4-H club meetings begin this week with our Homeschool club and Chester County Junior High School followed by Chester County High School.
