“Self-love is the source of ALL our other loves.” – Pierre Corneille
Sympathy to seven families – Mildred Cothren Shields (4-9-32 to 11-29-22) mother of Jerry, Loyce, Mike and Lisa Cothren. During later elementary years the Cotherns moved to John Tignor Grocery and post office. It was located on Highway 22 South in the curve near the gin. An addition to the side of the store gave room. Some of Loyce’s pals (Kathy Tignor and I for sure) spent the night giggling. Mrs. Mildred was very patient with us. She is buried at Bolivar Memorial. Loyce lives in Bolivar and was good to her mother; Douglas Lawrence Jones (5-21-80 to 12-1-22) graduated from Chester County High School in 1998. His parents are Randy (Vivian) Jones and Nelda (Wayne) Rhodes. Doug had recently left a Facebook message which offers much comfort. You can read his obit on line at George Smith’s – his message is included to offer comfort. His service is Thursday at George Smith Funeral Home; Joel L. Rinks (8-28-55 to11-30-22). He was in the military. He will have a later private service; Ann Colleen Cupples Moore (4-6-37 to 12-1-22) – Haltoms Cemetery; and Durrell Hurst Jordan (3-11-50 to 12-3-22) – wife of Steward – Little Hatchie.
Also, Paulette McNeil Sells (3-17-63 to 12-1-22) was a cook at Jacks Creek Elementary School. Her parents are Larry (Paulene) and (deceased) Glenda (Danny) Rogers. Paulette’s grandmother, Paulene, sewed for me. Paulene was shocked when I brought 27 pieces of fabrics for my new school clothes. I told her to use the same pattern to save time. Paulette thought that was funny! Paulette was a sweet student of mine at junior high. She never broke a class rule, received many yum-yums, and students and teachers loved her. Paulette was quiet but so well-mannered – just a perfect angel with a smile that reached her twinkling eyes. Also, I visited Paulette at JC School lunchroom. Paulette had changed so very little, and the visit made me feel younger going back in time with her. Her mother had the same quietness and both had beautiful skin. Paulette, her mother and grandparents were very special to me. I even visited Glenda at healthcare. Then she got better, so I visited in her home. She bragged on her children saying they helped her often, so she could try to stay home. I am sorry Paulette left too young in life.
Stevie Lee Mooney (10-2-85 to 12-2-22) is the son of Barry Mooney and Sherrie Doyal. Barry was my junior high student. His daddy, Jesse supported me in guiding Barry to keep on trying and head for success. I know Barry would have followed in his daddy’s footsteps. Automobile accidents rob us of more years with loved ones. I am sorry Stevie died so young – Roby Cemetery; and Ronnie Glenn Capooth (11-21-55 to 12-3-22) daddy of Joey Capooth. I taught Joey at junior high. He was a sweet student and showed me respect – Old Friendship. Also, “Cheers” actress Kirstie Alley (1-12-51 to 12-5-22) died from cancer.
Christmas parade was a long one with beautiful floats and lots of vehicles. It started at 7 p.m. and ended at 8 p.m. Five cousins and Mary Curtis’s cars were in my grandmother’s drive-way on East Main. We had a great view mostly from our warm cars having private picnics. I loved Mickey Mouse and characters. I could see lots of work to help Chester County have an early boost of Christmas cheer. It was so nice of FHU to share cups of hot cocoa. Next year maybe some stores will offer gingerbread cookies or peppermint candy. It gets us in the mood when others give from the heart. The scene at town square is a beautiful post card. I think we need a giant sled to pose in for pictures. Volunteers? Call 989-7485.

Nancy and Taze Lofton support talent brought to Williams Auditorium throughout the year. You can see the list by googling WilliamsAuditorium.com. Brenda Hannah, Mary Curtis, Delores Perkins, Charlotte Joyner joined Don and me in attending “The Edward Twins” performance. The brothers are Vegas Top Impersonators and Impressionists. They do 300 shows yearly. Have you ever seen a two-man show? It was something I shall never forget. I was in Las Vegas with all the shiny curtains, glistening costumes with rhinestones and glitter. We should show appreciation to Shane Connor for finding and booking this talent for a small Tennessee town. Many out of town guests attended. A row behind us were from Savannah and the row in front was from Lexington. A large tour bus brought in a group. Some stars I remember — Dolly Parton, Barbara Streisand, Sonny and Cher, Bocelli, Tom Jones, Elvis, Burl Ives and Jimmy Durante. When Neil Diamond sang the local crowd joined in singing the verse looking at Caroline Johnson. I bet her ears were red!
We can no longer get a “sugar high” by eating “fun-size” candy bars. Now there are only five in the package costing $1.35. Remember the good old days (not decades) when you got 10 fun size bars for a buck? Slowly the package went to six for a buck. Now we buy five flavors hoping the “sugar high” might come back to us!
Tenderly remember – Mother died 12-5-73 and several of her family died in December, too. Her loved ones are Nick Ellis (12-11-97); Emmett Maness (12-5-77); James Maness (12-4-97); and Linda Fletcher Goff married Neal Fletcher, my mother’s brother. She was killed (12-5-97). Don lost his aunt, Louise O’Neal (12-17-98) and his mother, Robbie O’Neal Jones (12-9-99). December has sadness, but it has gladness. We count all our blessings and so thankful for memories and support from calls or cards. That is one love. Our self-love is the source of ALL our other loves.
