Letter To The Editor: So Help Me God

Dear Editor,

“So Help Me God.” This oath is specified in Article II, Section One, Clause Eight of the U.S. Constitution. This clause is one of two oaths or affirmation clauses, but it alone actually specifies the words that must be spoken. Article VI, Clause Three requires the persons specified to be bound by oath to support this constitution.

This oath requires much more than this general oath of allegiance and fidelity; the president is to swear that he will preserve, protect and defend the U.S. constitution to the best of his ability.

April 30, 1789 was the first inauguration of a president. George Washington said the oath, “So help me God.”

The constitution gives an option to say the oath several ways. The reason for this may be related to Christians, including the Quakers, who apply the scripture literally. James 5:12 – “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by earth, but let your yea be yea and your nay, nay lest ye fall into condemnation.”

Most presidents, not all, would raise their right hand and put their left hand n the Bible. Some would kiss the Bible, but in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower broke the tradition by saying a prayer while holding the Bible. Others swore on a book of law with the intention that they were swearing on the Constitution.

The Presidential Oath has been taken over 75 times. Seems to me that this oath needs to stay as is. We need God in every way.

But hold on to your seats. There are some Democrats and maybe even some Republicans who are now saying that the oath should be changed because of one’s beliefs. That’s pushing religion on you. Can you believe this? I have a special, breaking news announcement: if it wasn’t for God, we wouldn’t be here on this earth, which is very immortal right now. We as Christians have sat back and done very little to stop our leaders whom we put in office. And we can vote them out. Our 10 commandments, our prayers, the Bible and anything about God have been removed from a lot of schools, courts, government buildings.

And what about Old Glory? What disgraceful things some have done to our flag. Our country is headed for a terrible awakening if our country doesn’t turn back to God for help. Man made laws won’t solve this country’s problems. God’s Laws will turn our nation around if only we obey them. I am worried and very afraid for my grandkids. What are they going to have to live through? Stay in prayer for mankind and this country.

God Bless America.

Sincerely,

Imogene Naylor
