Chester County 4-H members are starting the year off on the right foot. Fourth and fifth graders met with Mrs. Madison this month to talk about horses and how to take care of them as an introduction to the 4-H Horse Bowl and Hippology contests. They discussed upcoming events for February. In February, 4-H members can get involved by writing a speech to give to their classmates. The best speech in each class will be invited to compete at the county 4-H speech contest. This is a great opportunity for students to voice their opinions and talk about topics they are passionate about. Fourth graders should prepare a speech the length of one to two minutes about a topic of their choosing. Fifth graders should prepare a two- to three-minute speech. Sixth through eighth grade students should expect to talk about this contest at their upcoming 4-H meeting soon. Each 4-H member is encouraged to participate in this contest during their February meeting.
There are many other exciting opportunities ahead for 4-H members. We will soon discuss summer camp options, participation in the 4-H chick chain event, horse field day, and horse judging. Be sure to ask your 4-H members about what they are learning this year in their monthly 4-H meetings and follow our UT Extension-Chester County Facebook page to stay update with all events and happenings.
