Sports rivalries are always very fun for both teams and their fanbases. For Chester County Girls’ Soccer, one of those rivalries is with South Gibson. The Eagles played the Hornets on September 8. On May 16, a car accident tragically took the lives of three Chester County student-athletes and left one in critical condition. We sadly lost Roselyn Roberts, Kaylee Daniel, and Cayla Lenon. Kristen Daniel is alive and fighting to return today. The Hornets had set up a tribute to Roselyn and Kaylee that had their names and soccer number on a sign attached to the fence surrounding the field. They also had a sign for Kristen Daniel and Coach Judd Davis that had the hashtags PrayForKristen and JuddStrong, respectively. Kristen has been at the hospital since the tragic crash, and Coach Judd has had serious medical issues that have kept him from the sidelines. In the words of South Gibson’s Coach Ellis, even though we are rivals on the field, we understand that this is just a game. These shows of support are not isolated. Fayette-Ware also led a prayer for Chester County’s community prior to their Week 1 matchup in football. On Senior Night, a tribute was made to Cayla Lenon, which had a CL, her initials, spray painted onto the field. After the seniors had been recognized, Chester County took a moment to recognize Cayla on what would have been her Senior Night. Though we still feel the loss of our friends today, we appreciate the support shown from other schools and communities. The actions of these schools show that this is more than a game.
In other news, the Student Health Council started the “Get Your Selfie to School” campaign, where they take pictures with Chester County students and give out candy just for showing up to school. The goal is to promote good attendance at school. HOSA will have a blood drive on September 16. Also, FFA has started selling mums for decoration on Fridays both at the Garden Shed and the Henderson Farmer’s Market.
Chester County played the Bobcats of McNairy on Friday. While the Eagles played extremely well during the third quarter, the energy the rest of the game did not quite match, leading to a 33-13 loss for the Eagles. Football plays at Liberty Tech, who is coming off a deafening loss versus Haywood on September 18. Chester County Volleyball played rival Lexington on Monday. The girls beat our biggest rivals in four sets, solidifying their spot as number one in the district.
