Congratulations to Lucy Deweese, our Scripps Howard Spelling Bee Winner. She correctly spelled the word “batten” to seal the deal. The runner-up is Tanis Osterfoss. Lucy will now begin the next step to qualify for the next level.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16. Our goal is for ALL parents to be contacted. Teachers have sent home forms and progress reports. Those who have chosen virtual meetings, phone calls or messages about progress should be receiving those this week. Teachers should send home appointment times for those who want to meet in person on Thursday night. 
REMINDER: There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, Feb. 17, or Monday, Feb. 20.
IN THE CLASSROOM – Texts and skills this week…
Fifth grade ELA: Narrative Writing and/or beginning Module 4 which deals with African Americans breaking down barriers and influencing society using the text, “We Are the Ship: the Story of Negro League Baseball”; Math: Line Plots with Fractional Data; Science: Balanced/Unbalanced Forces and Patterns in Motion; Social Studies: World War II.
Fourth grade ELA: Continuing “Hatchet,” Summarizing, Ideas for narrative writing; Math: Multiplying a whole number by a fraction and Add/Subtract mixed numerals; Science: Interpreting Maps (volcanoes/earthquakes); Social Studies: Beginning Civil War unit
Activity Classes:
Academic Lab – Poetry
Computer – Last week, Mrs. Kelley talked with the students about kindness. For the next two weeks, students will learn how to create transitions and animate slides.
Library – Library students will travel to Portland, Ore., on our quest to read around the world! Students will read to learn information about an African American who explored with Lewis and Clark!
Music – Black History Month inspired lessons. We will teach about more genres of music whose development were influenced by African American musicians and composers.
