East Chester students and teachers did an amazing job with the Veterans Day program held last Friday. The gym was packed with veterans and current military personnel, as well as parents and others from our community. Many of our third grade students had speaking parts, and each grade sang a patriotic song. The Boy Scouts posted colors for the program. The book “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven was used as students placed objects on the white table in memory of fallen soldiers. Thanks to our principal Dr. Kim Scott and our vice-principal Mrs. Renee Thomas for all of their hard work in order to make this program so meaningful for us all! Thank you for your service, veterans and soldiers!
Kindergarten students learned about different Native American tribes. They compared and contrasted the environment they lived in, the clothing they wore, the food they ate and the shelters they lived in to today’s world. The kindergartners work on new sight words and cvc words each week in reading. In math, they learned numbers to ten and about the number bonds that make those numbers when added together.
In third grade, some classes learned all about the classification of animals and how scientists classify them. Some studied amphibians and reptiles in reading. In math third graders studied multiplying and dividing. In math enrichment the students shared ways that math is important to restaurant workers. In reading intervention and enrichment, students learned about the inner and outer plants, their order and characteristics.
First graders learned about the water cycle and three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). They learned about the moon and also adding and subtracting within 20. While preparing for the Veterans Day program, first graders learned a lot about the American flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, and our national anthem.
Library students studied the signs of autumn as well as veterans and soldiers. We also talked about Thanksgiving.
Second grade students made a Veterans Day video by reading the book “H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet” by Devin Scillian. Thanks to Mrs. Becky Hartle who prepared the video for viewing on our East Chester PTO Facebook page. We hope you will take time to enjoy this video!
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Susan Patterson, one of our retired teachers. Mrs. Patterson’s husband Steve has passed away. We love you, Mrs. Susan!
East Chester is truly the place to be!
