It has been a great week here at Jacks Creek Elementary School! Read on to hear more about our learning!
Kindergarten had another fantastic week. We continued with our CKLA reading program, and we worked on letters, blending sounds to read words, sight words and also number/number words, counting, shapes and comparing groups in math. Information will be sent home soon about parent/teacher conferences in October.
We had a great week in first grade! We read “The Crowded, Noisy House” and “The Tale of Peter.” We learned that things could always be worse and that we should always listen to our parents. We worked on identifying short vowel sounds in words. We also began reading in our readers! We are so excited about learning to read more this year. In math, we started working on addition word problems by putting two groups together. We look forward to another great week of learning!
In second grade last week, we began a new math topic. Students showed quite a bit of improvement in addition and subtraction, so we are ready to move ahead with other skills. Thanks for help practicing at home! We started Unit 2, working on even and odd numbers. Now we made and used arrays to find totals. We are continuing these skills this week and also are assessing them. In reading we began our unit on the War of 1812. This is an interesting unit, and we enjoy studying some of our nation’s history. Be sure to ask us what we learned each day. Also, do not forget to check our homework, behavior and temperature each day; then initial all these pages. We are looking forward to fall now with cooler temperatures and the changes of the colors of the leaves! Happy Autumn!
In third grade we moved right along in our learning with some fun activities. For instance, the kids got to watch some animals live through webcams earlier last week and are experiencing a virtual zoo this week. They were super excited to learn how to multiply, as we dove deeper into multiplication of single-digit numbers using the strategies we have learned – repeated addition, skip counting with number lines and arrays. They also like the animals that are the focus of our reading. The characteristics of animals help us to classify them as we continued in our nonfiction reading and science materials. Through this, students are learning about kingdoms, habitats, vertebrates and invertebrates, eating habits and other ways to classify animals, as well as text features, main ideas, parts of speech, sequencing, compound sentences, and more. We also continued practicing informative writing. Please continue to practice those spelling words and read with your child daily. We are on the track for a great year of learning and growing!
Our Farmer of the Week goes to Nolan Elway, whose favorite books are books by Dr. Seuss, and his favorite food is chicken. We are proud to have this student shine brightly at our school! Our Staff Farmer of the Week goes to Hailey Thomas. Her favorite book is The Invisible Boy, and her favorite food is cheeseburgers. We appreciate all that she does for our school as one of our third grade teachers.

The JCES PSO Officers for the 2020-21 school year are Heather Verduzco, President; Sarah Clayton, Vice-President; Brooke Simon, Reporter; and Candace Shumate, Treasurer. They are already planning and preparing information to share out with our JCES families.

PSO Membership Drive ends on September 25! Our goal is to raise $1500 with 500 members! When we reach our goal, students will have a “Dress Like A Farmer” Day!
