What a wonderful week we had at Jacks Creek Elementary School! Read on to hear about the exciting things we learned about!
Kindergarten students worked on blending sounds into words! We also found details in stories and answer all kinds of questions about what we are reading. In math we learned to put numbers in order and began recognizing greater and less.
We had a great week in first grade. We continued reading fables and short stories such as “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Crowded, Noisy House” and “All Stories are Anansi’s.” In skills we continued learning to read individually and learned the tricky words said and says. In writing we continued learning about complete sentences. In math we continued with adding strategies within 10.
In second grade we finished our reading unit on Fairy Tales and Tall Tales. We have enjoyed learning about exaggeration through legends such as Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Tennessee’s very own legend Casey Jones. We will try writing our own Tall Tales now, which we will be excited to share. In math we began Topic 3: Adding within 100 using different strategies. We will be taking our first CASE Assessment in second grade at the end of this month. It will include math skills we are learning, reading and writing. We will be working hard to start getting ready for that test.
In third grade we began learning about text features while reading about how animals are classified. We have become third grade zoologists and practiced our writing through recording our observations in “field journals.” In math we continued to learn multiplication. We reinforced factors 0, 1, 2, 5, 9 and 10. We will test on one factor per week. Students had their timed test on their tens facts. These are skills easily practiced at home; we would appreciate any extra help after school.
Our Beekeeper of the Week goes to Dominic Hairrell, who says his favorite books are books about dogs and his favorite food is chicken. We are proud to have this student shine brightly at our school! Our Staff Beekeeper of the Week goes to Mary Allison Katras. Her favorite books are the Harry Potter series, and her favorite food is sushi. We appreciate all that she does as our RTI Coordinator!
