We have had another great week as we entered the month of November!
Kindergarten is learning to read phrases and decode words! We are also learning about addition and comparing numbers less than 10.
First grade had a great week! We compared and contrasted stories such as “Tom Thumb,” “Thumbelina,” and “Issun Boshi.” We read more stories in Gran, reviewed nouns and read long vowel words spelled with tricky e such as cute. In math we continued working on word problems for adding and subtracting.
In second grade we are learning about insects, their habitats and what makes them unique. Some of us are working on research projects about insects that we are very curious about. We will be presenting our research project to our peers in the coming week. This has been an exciting learning experience using different resources and creating an insect using craft supplies. In math we are combining addition and subtraction both with and without regrouping as we work on Topic 7. In science we are learning about scientists and the tools they use. We are looking forward to getting to do experiments and learn more about science firsthand.
In third grade we are continuing to learn about space, more specifically gravity, space craft and the moon landing. Students will begin researching a planet and create informative writing to go with it. Students brought in Solar System Projects. Their projects looked amazing! We appreciate all the hard work they used to create their project of the solar system or an object in our solar system. In math we are learning about how to solve two-step word problems involving all four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and finding patterns. In science we are learning about cloud types and the weather. Students will learn how to be prepared if stormy weather comes our way.
Our Beekeeper of the Week goes to Gabby Leverette, who says her favorite book is “Beauty and the Beast,” and her favorite food is pizza. We are proud to have this student shine brightly at our school! Our Staff Beekeeper of the Week goes to Hailey Thomas. Her favorite book is “The Invisible Boy,” and her favorite food is a cheeseburger! We appreciate all that she does as one of our third grade teachers!
JCES is hosting a Canned Food Drive through Nov. 19. Please help us collect nonperishable food items for a local soup kitchen which serves many families in need within our community. Students can bring to school or families can drop off at the school. Examples of nonperishable items: canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter and jelly, rice, beans, pasta and juice. The grade level with the most items collected will get a special prize.
November is here and brings with it the reminder of blessings that surround us! We want to share our gratefulness! We are doing a project called the JCES Grateful Project. Our fall focus is GRATITUDE! Even though we are still in challenging times, we have many reasons to be grateful! Project instructions: We encourage our students and families to use their imagination and creativity to work together to create a “Grateful Project.” Use your own ideas or research online or in magazines, etc. The project needs to be easy for the student to transport to and from school. Bring projects to school on Wednesday, Nov. 17. This project is NOT required, but we hope all families will participate!
Labeling Items of Clothing: as temperature continues to fall, remember to label your child’s winter clothing items (jackets, coats, hats, etc.). We already have a few jackets hanging on our lost and found rack.
