What a wonderful week at Jacks Creek Elementary School as we are so thankful for the teachers we have and the learning we are doing!
Kindergarteners are beginning to read phrases! We also are learning lots of sight words and sounds to make us strong readers. In math we are counting to 20 and starting to use addition. This week we learned about Veterans Day and honored some veterans in our families.
We have had a good week in first grade. We continued reading folktales. We read “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Hu Gu Po.” Then, we compared and contrasted the adventures in the stories. In skills we continued in our “Gran” reader. We reviewed common and proper nouns, long vowel spellings and our tricky words. In writing we continued writing about what we are thankful for. In math we took our topic one math test and began a unit on solving addition problems and word problems within 20. We are also participating in a can food drive this month. We are so proud of our first graders for working so hard to bring in canned goods.
In second grade we are completing our unit on insects this week. This has been a fun topic for us as we have learned about things such as the metamorphosis of butterflies, the exoskeletons of beetles and the bioluminescence of lightning bugs. One of the highlights was reading about strange insects, which we have never heard of, and doing individual research on an insect we are interested in. In math we have continued working on subtraction with and without regrouping in word problems. In Ms. Nancy’s class, we have been reading the Magic Tree House book, “Thanksgiving on Thursday.” Learning about the Pilgrims, Native Americans and the first Thanksgiving helped us think about how we celebrate similarly and differently. We are looking forward to spending some time on our Thanksgiving Break with family and friends.
In third grade we continued our Solar System Unit this week. So far, we have learned about the sun, the moon, asteroids, comets and meteors. This week, our focus was on exploring space. We learned some of the history of space explorers and more about the tools astronomers use to explore space. In math we focused on learning how to solve two step word problems. We broke down each word problem, underlined the important information and worked to solve each problem together. We also tested on factor number eight. As always, skip counting and multiplication is so important to practice at home. The more they practice, the more confident they will become
Our Beekeeper of the Week goes to Gabby Leverette, who says her favorite book is “Beauty and the Beast,” and her favorite food is pizza. We are proud to have this student shine brightly at our school! Our Staff Beekeeper of the Week goes to Hailey Thomas. Her favorite book is “The Invisible Boy,” and her favorite food is a cheeseburger! We appreciate all that she does as one of our third grade teachers!
JCES is hosting a Canned Food Drive through Nov. 19. Please help us collect nonperishable food items for a local soup kitchen which serves many families in need within our community. Students can bring to school or families can drop off at the school. Examples of nonperishable items: canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter and jelly, rice, beans, pasta and juice. The grade level with the most items collected will get a special prize.
Labeling Items of Clothing: as temperature continues to fall, remember to label your child’s winter clothing items (jackets, coats, hats, etc.). We already have a few jackets hanging on our lost and found rack.
Box tops are a super easy way to earn money for our school. Clip box tops or download the box tops for education app. Scan your receipts to earn free money for our school! It’s that easy!
Are You Connected? JCES uses the Remind App to communicate information to parents. If you have not joined or if you have changed phone numbers, please text @ccsdces to 81010.
Looking Ahead:
Nov. 18 Progress Reports
Nov. 22-26 – Thanksgiving Break
Dec. 6-16 – CASE Testing (Second-Third Grade)
