We have had a jam-packed week here at Jacks Creek Elementary School! We have loved every minute of it! Read on to hear what fun and rigorous activities we have completed this week!
Kindergarten is working to increase our addition fluency with addition to 10. We are reading decodable stories with focus on the sounds sh, ch and th. Students are reading independently and with partners!
Our first graders have enjoyed learning about our Earth during our Read Aloud and the three words that geologists think about when studying our Earth – heat, pressure and time. Our boys and girls have been truly amazed that the core of our Earth is 4,000 miles down below the Earth’s crust and that the outer core is liquid molten rock. They learned that the moment the molten rock erupts it becomes lava.
In second grade this week, we finished our study of the “Westward Expansion” in the U.S. during the 1800s. We really enjoyed learning about American history and some of our past Presidents. As a culminating activity to this unit, we all built boats and used pennies as weights to test the strength of the boats. Some boats were pretty strong, holding lots of pennies, while some sank a little quicker; however, we all had a great time with this activity. In math we have had a sweet time learning about shapes and fractions as we divided chocolate bars and ate different shaped treats. We are ready for a long weekend and will work more on addition and subtraction when we come back next week. We will be solving problems with numbers to 1,000.
In third grade we are learning many new facts! We are learning about Colonial America and the 13 colonies. We are connecting these social studies standards to our reading. In writing we are writing narrative writing. We are focusing more on personal narratives. In math we are wrapping up equivalent fractions. We will test over this unit.
Our first student spotlight of the week goes to Ely Harris, whose favorite food is pizza and favorite book is “The Berenstain Bears.” Our second student spotlight of the week goes to Jacie Cox, whose favorite food is strawberries and favorite book is “My Little Pony.” We are proud to have these students shine brightly at our school!
We will have Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday. Reminder that there is no school on Friday and Monday.
Thank you so much for your hard work during the Dominos’ Fundraiser. We raised $3,030 thanks to your generous donations to our school!
