Greetings from the City! “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” No matter what life brings us, we always have something to be glad about. Do not worry about what we do not have, but be happy for what we do have. While you are reading this article, stop and take a moment to pray for the families that are homeless, have no food or sleep under bridges or on sidewalks, for the thousands of U.S. Troops that are away from their families and for the mom and dad who do not know where their child/children are. I often think about the mom/the dad who may have lost their child/children or loved one in some type of shooting and all of the thousands of families that have lost a loved one because of the COVID-19. So many of us have not had to go through that type of pain. I thank the Lord because He knows how much we can bear!
I hope the fathers had a wonderful Father’s Day! On Father’s Day, I talked to a dear friend of mine. I called Mr. Jimmy Ruth; I wanted to wish him a happy Father’s Day. I was glad to hear his voice, and he was excited also. He loves to read the Chester County Independent. He wanted me tell everyone, “Hello,” for him and would love to hear from his friends. With the coronavirus he cannot have visitors, but we can send him a card or letter. Here is his address: Covington Convenient Care Center, 765 Bert Johnston Ave, Covington, TN 38019. The Juneteenth First Annual Celebration, hosted by Oasis Community Development Corporation, was held June 19 at the Chester County soccer field at North Chester, historically known as Vincent High School. Celebration of Juneteenth – a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” – recognizes when the United States legally ended its historic practice of slavery. Black Independence day – June 19, 1865. It was a wonderful event held in the community with great food (especial the fish) and great entertainment. Over 300 people attended the unified event. They had the honor to have both mayors there – Mayor Bobby King, City Mayor, and Mayor Barry Hutcherson, County Mayor. There also was time set aside for a meet and greet for those seeking election: Mayor Bobby King (Incumbent); Donna Butler, City Mayor; Beverly Morten, Property Assessor (Incumbent); Buel Mannes, City Alderman; Keith Smith, City Alderman; Dennis Brown, City Alderman; Irene Rinks, Property Assessor; Darryl Thompson, Property Assessor; and Todd Davis, City Alderman and School Board. It was a great event. Many of the people that came to the event said that they are looking forward for next year. On Saturday, June 20 at 9 a.m., there was a peaceful march for racial justice from the old Vincent High School to the Chester County Court House lawn. The citizens that participated in the march would like to thank the police department for making sure everyone was safe and protected.
