Hello to everyone! It is good to be here with you one more time. For this is the day the Lord has made, let us be happy in it and take things one day at a time. I apologize for last week’s column. I accidentally sent the wrong one to the paper. No, we were not in D.C. The news from Southern Oak and other news was old news.
This is the correct column from last week: The City would like to take this time out to thank Southwest Human Resource Agent for the outstanding job they have been doing this year with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals while school is not in session. Patti Pickler and her staff have gone way beyond the call of duty again this year. Even with COVID-19, the program was not defeated. For some of our children, this could be the only meal they receive. If you are interested or want more information about the summer food program, please give Patti a call at 989-5111. Patti, thank you for feeding so many of our children this summer!
Have you been there yet? I am talking about our Henderson Farmers Market! It is open from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. every Friday. If you like fresh fruit and vegetables, you can pick them and much more up there. Family and friends, it is time to get ready for the winter. When my mother Annie Clay or grandmother Zelmar Bass would say those words, we knew it was time to start CANNING. They would get those Mason Jars out, and we would by hand wash them and boil them out in hot water. It seemed to me like there were 1,000 of them! Let me not forget those BIG blue canning pots. I was only eight years old, but it was fun! You know children learn through having fun. We would snap green beans, pick okra, shuck corn, pick peas and peel tomatoes and potatoes. We would can them in the summer because they knew winter was coming. Once we would finish canning a batch, mother would take them out of that big, hot canning pot and place them on a table; she would turn the tops so they was semi tight on the jar. My job was to listen for the tops to start popping. I can hear them now. Once they popped, I would turn the top to make sure it was tight. Mother would come behind me to make sure they were good and tight. The next day, we would put the date on the jars and place them back in the Mason jar box, and I would slide them under the bed. Then, we would start all over again the next day. On a cold winter day, mother would call on one of her children to go under the bed and bring her a jar of tomatoes, green beans and corn. It was so good! Tasted like she just picked them out of the garden! They were always prepared. Why? Because they knew winter was coming. So let us make our way down to the Henderson Farmers Market! Stop at Gene Record Park under the Farmers Market Pavilion and purchase what you need and start canning. There is nothing than a jar of tomatoes that you canned in the summer.
Well, it is almost here! Do not forget about the Back to School Drive-By Bash from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Chester County Middle School. If your child needs school supplies, backpacks or uniforms for Chester County students, the place to be driving by is Chester County Middle School. Hope to see you there!
On July 18 someone celebrated her 10th birthday. Desaraye Genesy, your Nana (Vivian), Papa (Larry), Momma (Eboni Burton), Destyn, Danyelle and great-grandparents John and Lillia Cawthon want to wish you a happy birthday. They love you very MUCH! We hope you enjoyed your special day! Pray for Pastor Marles Flower. He is in Jackson General. Also, pray for Pastor James Arnold and our essential, indispensable workers. Pray for the people you know need it at this time; just call their name out and pray for a moment. Thank you for understanding.
Well, parents/children, time is running out, and the countdown has begun for some parents! The questions are what shall we do? Do we send our children to school? Do we home school our children? Do we go virtual? Will our children, parents, older family members and teachers be safe? Will COVID-19 spread more? These are so many unsure questions that are going through the minds of people. Yes, we need to wear our mask when we leave our homes to protect ourselves and others. To me, it is the same as when we put our seatbelt on, secure our children in car seats, do not talk on cell phone when driving and do not drank while driving just to name a few. It is all for the protection of people. We live here in the Bible belt. The word of God says, “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14. So let us pray and seek the Lord so our questions will be answered!
Guess who just turned 69? My husband Pastor Frank Holiday! We celebrated his birthday on 7/20 with a drive-by birthday parade. He was so surprised. It was lots of fun! We were safe, and the people who attended were also. On 7/11, Rev. James Arnold celebrated his birthday; his wife Girtie Arnold celebrated her birthday on 7/19. The City would like to wish them all a Happy Birthday!
Continue to pray for the people who are in the hospitals, for the who that are sick in their homes, for our children, teachers and families, for the men and women who are serving our country, for the incarcerated and for the U.S.A. Remember to patronize with our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can.
