Greeting from the City. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!
No matter what life brings us, we always have something to be glad about. Do not worry about what we do not have but be happy for what we do have. While you are reading this article, stop and take a moment to pray for the families that are homeless, those who have no food, those sleeping under bridges or on sidewalks, the thousands of U.S. Troops that are away from their families and the mom and dad that do not know where their child/children are. I often think about the mom/the dad who may have lost their child/children or loved one in some type of shooting and all of the thousands of families that have lost a loved one because of the COVID-19. So many of us have not had to go through that type of pain, but there are so many that have. So don’t worry, be happy and trust in the Lord!
I hope the fathers had a wonderful Father’s Day! Oh, how I miss my dad, Mr. Parnell Brown. This Father’s Day, I missed talking to my friend Mr. Jimmy Ruth. I would call and wish him a Happy Father’s Day, but this year, the Father (Lord) called him home, and he is in such a better place. However, I still miss him!
The Second Juneteenth Celebration hosted by Oasis Community Development Corporation was held June 19 at the Chester County soccer field, historically known as Vincent High School. Juneteenth – a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” – recognizes when the United States ended its historic practice of slavery, legally, in the real world June 19, 1865. Some refer to it as Black Independence Day.
The event started with a big kick off toy giveaway from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. for children of all ages up to 17 years old. The festivities began at 1 p.m. Featured were The Gospel Miracles along with Dr. Johnny Hill, Louis Hayslett of Ripley Tennessee, Little Chris and Reunited, Reverend Leon Taylor, Jeff McKnight, Marles and Sylvia Flowers. There was music for all ages that attended. It was an honor to have Mayor Barry Hutcherson, John Talbott, Justin Emerson, Lance Beshires, Memphis City Councilman J.P. Smiley, Jr. and Senator Page Walley in attendance.
It was a wonderful event held in the community with great food (especially the fish) and great entertainment. The community came out; over 150 people attended, not as many as last year, but it was a successful event. I had the pleasure to meet new friends.
One family was the Williams: Maurice and his lovely wife LaTeisha. Maurice is a new professor at Freed-Hardeman University in the Department of Health and Human Performance. They have four beautiful children – Dillon, Lia, Mila and Jace. They moved here from another state. The city of Henderson welcomes you here to our hometown. We pray it will be a blessing for the family. There were so many others families from the community, and I can not call by name because I will miss someone. Thank you for coming out. If you did not make it this year, it will be back next year. Hope to see you there. Thank you, President Biden, for making Juneteenth a Federal Holiday.
Our condolences go out to the Johnson family. Our dear loved one and friend, Phyllis Alice Johnson, was laid to rest on June 19. She will be missed but never forgotten. Our prayers are with Danny and the family.
The city would like to wish the following a Happy Birthday: Keisha Griggs and Patricia Jones, 6/27, and Mary Armstrong and John Barham, 6/28. We pray that you will have many more.
On the prayer list this week: the Johnson family, others that are in the hospitals or sick in their homes, our children, teachers and families and the men and women that is serving our country. Remember to pray for our United States of America.
