Hello to my family and friends. For this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! This is a new month and a new week, a week for new beginnings, new thoughts and a chance to do things better.
Well, spring is coming, and so is daylight saving time. We have one more week to enjoy before we spring forward. Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 13. I wish the time would just stay the same.
March 2 was Dr. Seuss’ birthday/Read Across America Day. The National Education Association sponsors this event to inspire reading in children throughout our schools and communities. So many children enjoy the stories, such as “Green Eggs and Ham” and other books from Dr. Seuss. By reading these books, our children have learned the meaning of sharing, caring, colors, counting and in some cases that life will not always be fair. The children at Head Start will experience eating green eggs and ham after reading the book by Dr. Seuss. I wonder how many of the children will like Sam I Am’s green eggs and ham!
February was Black History Month. Speaking of Black History Month, thank you to everyone that donated and made time for the Fifth Annual Black History program that was presented on Feb. 19 at the Chester County Senior Center. It was a walk through set up with so many pictures, news clipping and videos. The theme was Reviewing African American History in Chester County. The displays branched from 1934 until present time. There were 65 or more that attended this great event, and everyone did not sign in. There was a Scavenger Hunt as you walked through to fill in the answers and find the picture of great leaders. They also gave out prizes! It was a fantastic exhibit. The only thing I hate is that the newspaper did not know about it. If you did not attend the exhibit, you missed out on a lot of history! A BIG shout out goes to the Ladies from Henderson Community Committee. Ladies, the City of Henderson appreciates you and thanks you for enlightening everyone for the month of February. We all need more culture awareness in our communities.
You know earlier I mentioned that we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday; he would be a whopping 116 years old. Well, there is a lady that we all know so well; she was one of Chester County Head Start’s retired teachers, and she taught so many of our children. Linda Swafford is a loving kind person, and she is always thinking about someone else. Linda shared with me that her Auntie Ms. Peggy Clayton is turning 101 on March 5. Linda and her auntie had a conversation the other night. Auntie Peggy told Linda that her main worry now is being in World War III. She said that the Bible was being fulfilled quickly. She said she did not think she would have lived long enough to see the things we have seen in the past two years. Her mind is sharp! She takes care of her own business. She has received the Independent for years. She would always call Linda when Pat Jones or I would say something about Linda or some of her family. Her sight is fading, but she still walks to the basement to do her laundry. She has a rope tied to a laundry basket and pulls her clean, folded clothes up the stairway. This what I call Old School! Until three years ago, she was driving several of her friends to doctor appointments. Linda asked her how old they were. She would say in their 70s and 80s. They were people in her church. She gives God all the credit for a long life.
I love this story! So to the people of Henderson and surrounding area, let us flood Ms. Peggy Clayton with Birthday Cards or just a card, as Linda has requested that we show how much the City of Henderson loves her! Here is her address: 25 Johnson Rd. Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Please write BIG!
This week, we have several birthdays. Let us start with my baby brother, Dennis Brown on March 2; our Chester County Trustee Lance Beshires on March 6; Matilda Massengill, one of the best community helpers in Lucyville, on March 7; and Chastity Reeves on March 8. To all of you who work so hard here in our City of Henderson, we would like to wish you a Happy Birthday and may the Lord bless you with many more. Just to let you know, since your birthday is in March, your birthstone is aquamarine and bloodstone. The March flower is the daffodil.
Remember to pray for our community, children, teachers and families. On the prayer list this week is the family of Minister Paul Robinson and Mayriene Moten. If you live in the City of Henderson and have news about your family, birthday, anniversary, announcements, and things happening in the City, I need to hear from you; call me at 989-1907 and leave your message, or you may text me at 608-6132. HAVE A GREAT WEEK! BE BLESSED! LOVE YOU!
