Hello to everyone! As always, it is great to be with you today. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Last Sunday was such a beautiful Sunday for Mother’s Day. I hope you did something special for your mother.
National Nurses Week is May 6-12. From assisting with life-threatening ER crises to delivering babies and caring for the elderly in their last moments, nurses perform some of the most difficult and heartbreaking tasks in the medical world. As workers who perform the most essential healthcare tasks, nurses serve as the first point of contact for most patients. You may know a nurse; one of your family members could be a nurse. My mother was a nurse. When I was a child, the first black nurse I can remember is Mrs. Easter McHaney working for one of the doctors. I can not remember if it was for Dr. King or Dr. McClellan. As a child, I remember her being so kind to me, and she gave me a sucker. So during this National Nurses Week, let us honor their contributions and sacrifices and reminds us to thank the medical professionals who keep us healthy. Not only this week. We can say thank you anytime we visit the doctor office or hospital. I know God made them for this JOB!
May 5 was Cinco De Mayo. I have a dear friend by the name of Ms. Laura who works at Southwest HRA. On May 5 she treated everyone with a special surprise of salsa and chips to enjoy. So many asked the question, who brought this and what is it for? “It is Cinco de Mayo,” explained Ms. Laura while dressed in her very beautiful Mexican attire. How many of you know what this is? For the ones who do not know, I will share a little history with you.
So, Cinco De Mayo’s deeply rooted history in the Franco-Mexican War influenced Mexican-Mexican American communities in the early years of the American Civil War. In the early 1860s, as the Civil War erupted, these communities took up the banner of the Cinco De Mayo celebration as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy. Today, in the United States, Americans celebrate Mexican-American heritage and pride annually on May 5. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “fifth of May.”
An important thing to remember if you plan on celebrating Cinco de Mayo is that it is not the anniversary of Mexico’s independence. That is celebrated on Sept. 16; it is the anniversary of the 1810 call by Miguel Hidalgo for independence from Spain and is comparable to July 4 and the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. Ms. Laura, thank you for sharing a piece of history with us.
May 12 is the last day for the students in Head Start. The Chester County Head Start staff is planning a big celebration for the children. Some of the students will be moving on to Kindergarten, and some of the students will be returning back for the 2022-23 school year because they are not old enough for Kindergarten. To all of the parents that allowed your child/children to attend Head Start, the staff would like to say thank you and that they appreciate you and your family!
The City of Henderson says congratulations to the High School Graduates class of 2022! Your life has just begun. Birthday wishes to my brother Dexter Brown on May 11, Undra Massengill and Vivian Kelly on 5/13, Tyron Hall on 5/15 and Jill Irwin and Kalie Hall on 5/16. The City of Henderson sends birthday wishes to everyone at Southern Oaks and the Nursing Home who had a birthday this week; we pray the Lord will bless you with many more!
Continue to pray for people who are in the hospitals, for the ones who are sick in their homes, for our children, teachers and families, for the men and women who are serving our country for and the incarcerated.
Remember to patronize with our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can. If you live in the City of Henderson and have news about your family, birthday, anniversary, announcements and things happening in the City, I need to hear from you. Call me at 608-6132 and leave your message, or you may email me at gloria_holiday@msn.com. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
