Greetings from Hickory Corner!
It is time to say goodbye to July and hello to August. Another month that seems to have just flown by. July has brought a lot of hot weather, so hoping August will be a little cooler. I have spent many days at home because of the high temperatures. August also brings the end of summer for many as children and teachers are back to school on Aug. 2.
I apologize for not getting July birthdays listed timely. Belated birthday wishes go out to the following: Macy Morrison (July 5), Kim Hearn (July 5), Ruth Ann Lane (July 8), Frank Clayton (July 8), Danny Wade (July 10), Jo Ellen Garner (July 17) and Tim Clayton (July 19). Birthday wishes go out to Nancy Patterson (July 31). Happy birthday to all!
On Friday, July 23, New Home Baptist Church chartered a bus which took many church members to the Ark Encounter located in Williamstown, Ky. The Ark Encounter opened in 2016 and has a life size model of Noah’s Ark. It is 510 feet long and 85 feet wide. Although it was a hot weekend, I heard they all enjoyed the trip.
Congratulations to proud parents, Heath and Kayla Jones, on the birth of their baby girl Lila, born July 25. Lila’s big brothers are so excited to have a baby sister. Local grandparents are Randall and Patricia Jones and great-grandmother JoAnn Clayton.
Thank you, Anthony Crouse, for your phone call reminiscing about the good ole days. Anthony attended Hickory Corner School with his best friend Jackie Maness. He has memories of them fishing at Rudy Hole, which he said was off Hickory Corner Road, which runs into Old Friendship Road. Bonice Martin said she called this area “Aunt Emma’s Hole.” Wonder if there are other names? Also, Anthony said he always enjoyed visiting his great Uncle Oberd and Aunt Estelle Patterson and family. Do you have memories of your childhood days you would like to share? Please call me.
Recently, I went North to Illinois to visit my three kids. Terry was here visiting, and I decided at the last minute to go back with him. I was able to spend time with my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and my niece. I stayed busy every day. We had several large cookouts and lots of fun. We also went to see the movie “Elvis,” which was so good. I visited, shopped, ate out and got to go see my great-grandchild, Jepp, play baseball. After 10 days my daughter Cindy brought me home and stayed the week with me.
Thank you goes out to JoAnn Clayton for the chess pie she gave to us the day we got back home. It was very good and actually is one of Cindy’s favorite pies. It did not take long for us to finish it.
The corn crops looked great in Illinois as they have had plenty of rain. Our crops here need rain and hopefully we will get some this week. I read that over 60% of field crops grown in Chester County are grown using no till methods where the soil is not disturbed. Farming sure has been improved over the years as I think back to when I grew up and my dad plowed and tilled the land with a pair of mules. I remember helping him carry the fertilizer, carrying fresh water for him and at noon leading his mules to the pond to drink and then to the barn for them to eat and rest.
There will be a meeting at the HCC Center at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 28. If you have moved into our community, we welcome you to attend our meeting and learn more about our Center.
Remember in prayer Arlin Porter, Richy Butler, Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Peggy Lard, William and Eddie Luttrell and Donna Lynch. Continue to pray for each other, our country, and our world. Sympathy to all those who have recently lost loved ones. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call me.
If you would like to rent the HCC Center for your special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 608-1159.
I need all of your support for this article. Please call me with tidbits and news at 989-3315. You can share your vacations, birthday, anniversaries, and much more.
Make it a great week!
