Greetings from Hickory Corner!
It has been another hot week with temperatures in the 90s. A few thunderstorms have recently passed through, and we did get rain but not enough. Joel says to expect pop-up showers the next few days and a few thunderstorms. His forecast is correct as it was thundering and raining Monday evening as I wrote this.
Elvis Week is going on in Memphis Aug. 9-17 to honor the King of Rock and Roll. This is the 45th year of Elvis’ death. If you are an Elvis fan, you should take a trip to Memphis as there is a lot happening over the next week. Fans from around the world come together to celebrate his music and movies. There will be quite a few Elvis Tribute Artists performing (graceland.com). I bet they will make you believe and feel you are watching Elvis.
Do you remember where you were when you heard that Elvis had passed? I sure do. I was working at Allen’s Vogue Clothing in Pekin, Ill., and we heard it announced on the radio. Workers and customers just could not believe it. We were all heartbroken. Elvis was only 42 when he died. He sure accomplished a lot in his 42 years.
My son Greg is visiting, and he has been working outside in the heat mowing and trimming shrubs and a whole lot more. We have eaten out and shopped. I sure enjoy him being here.
Happy birthday to my great-grandson Jepp Patterson, who will be celebrating his eighth birthday on Aug. 14. He enjoys playing football and baseball. His favorite baseball team is the San Francisco Giants, and I heard he will be going to a game to see his favorite team in September as a birthday present. Go Giants! I saw Jepp play baseball when I was in Illinois, and I bet he may play for the Giants someday! Jepp’s grandpa Greg gets the Independent, so he will show this to him.
Greg and I have enjoyed fresh ripe tomatoes and onions from Ravon Maness. Thanks, Ravon, for sharing your garden. Has anyone else received a random act of kindness…give me a call. Let us spread kindness throughout our community. “Every act of kindness and compassion done by any man for his fellow Christian is done by Christ working within him.” – Julian of Norwich
