Greetings from Hickory Corner!
What is up with our weather? As I write this Monday, we have a freeze warning tonight with temperatures as low as 27. Brrrr. I hope the cold does not kill the spring flowers that have already bloomed. The first day of spring is next Monday, March 20, and I am expecting Mother Nature to start cooperating with warm and sunny days!
Speaking of spring flowers, the March birth flower is the daffodil. It is one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring and represents re-birth. I have many growing in my yard, so I hope the cold temperatures do not get to them. The birthstone for March is Aquamarine, which is a beautiful light blue.
This Friday, March 17, is St. Patrick’s Day. Do not forget to wear some green on Friday or risk getting pinched. I will share this Irish Blessing with all of you: “May love and laughter light your days/and warm your heart and home/May good and faithful friends be yours/wherever you may roam/May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures/May all life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours.” (Irish Proverb)
Come on out Saturday, March 18, to the Hickory Corner Community Center for some St. Patrick’s Day fun. There will be a St. Patrick’s Day gathering starting at 4 p.m. There will be a potluck meal with the meat being furnished. Please bring a side dish and/or dessert. Also, please bring prizes for the bingo games. With a “little luck of the Irish” you will win some prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend. Do not miss out on an afternoon of fun, good food and fellowship. Oh, and do not forget to wear your green!
Congratulations to Lt. Patrick and Taylor Thomas of Clarksville on the birth of their son Laine Elliot Thomas. He was welcomed home by his big brother PJ. Grandparents are Ron and Shay Griswell of Hickory Corner, and great-grandmother is Sarah Holmes of the Laurel Hill Community.
Patsy Jones mentioned keeping a journal in her recent news column. I have been keeping a journal since 1996 and maybe a little longer. I have been going back and reading many of them, and it lets me relive so many great moments. Really, it is like reading a book. I can not believe how busy I used to be and all the things I did. If you have been thinking of keeping a journal, start now. You will thank yourself many years from now when you want to travel back into time.
I recently dropped off an egg custard pie to William and Eddy Luttrell. I love this recipe because it makes its own crust. Very easy to make.
Historical Events in March: 1918 – Worldwide Influenza Epidemic “Spanish Flu” strikes America; 1933 – Franklin D. Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 32nd President; 1954 – RCA manufactures the first color television; 2020 – Global pandemic (COVID) shuts down much of our Nation.
Please remember in prayer Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Peggy Lard, William and Eddie Luttrell and Donna Lynch. Continue to pray for each other, our country, and our world. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call me. I do not like to add/remove a name without permission.
If you would like to rent the HCC Center for a special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 608-1159.
