Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Monday was a little breezy but plenty of sunshine. My lab Ruger and I took a walk Monday afternoon. We both needed a little exercise. Sunday was also a beautiful day. After church, I went into town and ate lunch. Afterwards, I stopped at Southern Oaks to visit Shirley Gaddy. It was so good to see her. She is as beautiful as always. She and I had a nice chat, and I sure enjoyed our visit. My James and Shirley’s late husband Billy Neal Gaddy grew up together. I was impressed with Southern Oaks as it was a beautiful place with friendly staff.
Bonice Martin called the other day asking for the recipe for my easy Egg Custard pie (that makes its own crust). The recipe is from the late Elsie Smith. Elsie and her husband Amos were members of the Hickory Corner Community Center, and everyone loved her Egg Custard pie. I remember asking her for the recipe, and she was happy to share. I have baked this pie many, many times and have shared the recipe often. I dropped off the recipe to Bonice a few days ago and also surprised her with a fresh baked Egg Custard pie. The next day I made one for myself.
I have spotted two hummingbirds at my feeder, which I cleaned and filled last week, but the last few days I have not seen any. I hope they will be back. I suppose they stopped here for a rest and filled their tummies up and traveled on. I also have been watching the squirrels doing their best to wreck my other bird feeders. They drive me nutty. I am thinking I need a separate squirrel feeder for them.
Did you know that this Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day? It is a day that brings awareness of the need to protect our Earth’s natural resources. One thing you can do to help is recycle. I started recycling many years ago after my granddaughter, Makenzie, encouraged me to give it a try. She told me that it can take 80-200 years for a soda can to decompose in a landfill. It amazes me how much I have for recycling each week and to think how I use to just toss it all in the trash.
According to the Chester County Recycling website, they accept aluminum, plastic, paper and cardboard. They do not accept glass, plastic bags or styrofoam, so please do not put these items in your recycling. If you are not currently recycling, please try it and help reduce items placed in our landfills. It is easy to do. You can pick up blue recycling bags when you drop your garbage off. Give it a try!
Please remember in prayer Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Peggy Lard, William and Eddie Luttrell, and Donna Lynch. Continue to pray for each other, our country and our world. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call me. I do not like to add/remove a name without permission.
If you would like to rent the HCC Center for a special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 731-608-1159.
