Greetings from Hickory Corner!
My son Terry is here visiting from Illinois, and I am enjoying having him here. Monday, we took a ride to Jackson, picked up carryout from Catfish Cabin and brought it home. It had been before March that I had their fried fish and hushpuppies. We brought a plate back to JoAnn Clayton, who in return provided us with homemade apple dumplings. Mmmm good.
I recently watched gospel singing on WKNO, which featured George Beverly Shea singing “How Great Thou Art.” Did you know that Shea began singing at Billy Graham’s crusades in 1947 and continued for nearly 60 years. He would open the crusade by singing a gospel song before Graham delivered his sermon. He sang “How Great Thou Art” for six weeks every night at Madison Square Garden. Shea is the one that suggested to Graham that when the choir sings “Just As I Am.” Graham should simply say, “As the choir sings, you come.” Soon after that, Graham began to use that phrase that stuck for the remaining of his career. I watched many of Billy Graham’s sermons on television over the years and that part was always very moving. George Beverly Shea passed away in 2013 at the age of 104.
With the vaccine being delivered to our area, there is even more hope that we can get this pandemic under control. Please remember to continue to wear your mask, social distance and wash your hands. Someday I believe this will be behind us.
Does history repeat itself? Did you know that in 1878 the yellow fever hit Memphis? Yellow fever was caused by mosquitoes, and it spread quickly throughout Memphis killing over 5,100 people. Over half of the population, 25,000 people, fled Memphis and were greeted in other cities with quarantines. There was no vaccine and no cure at the time.

Roland, Peggy Lard and William and Eddie Luttrell. Please continue to pray for those who are dealing with COVID and other sicknesses. Sympathy to all those who have recently lost loved ones. “Blessed are those that mourn for they shall be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4
