Greetings from Hickory Corner!
During our recent winter snowstorm, my mind wandered to when I was a child when our only warmth came from burning wood. Then, I thought about my mama cooking on a wood stove and how hard it must have been to keep the heat at just the right temperature for making biscuits, cakes, etc. Here is a poem that I have in a scrapbook from many years ago, called “Woodbox.” I have no idea who wrote it, but it sure brings back memories of my childhood.
“Behind the old black kitchen stove/Was where our woodbox stood/And as a girl, it was my chore/ To mind it brim with wood/Outside the house, the split was piled/As cut from massive trunks/Winter ripened, under snow/In shiny frozen chunks/But once inside, the sticks would thaw/And ants came creeping out/The business end of Mama’s broom/Would put them all to rout/Old orchard trees would burn the best/For after-dinner treat/And we would almost smell an apple/Baking in the heat/Strange, I miss that woodbox/Now I’m growing old/A house without a woodbox/Is just a little cold.”
March birthdays include Wayne Patterson (3/6), Bill Morrison (3/7), and Dennis Clayton (3/24). Wishing you all a happy birthday and a year that is blessed.
I had a nice surprise visit from Tom Gipson last week. He stopped by with a barbecue plate, and we were able to chat awhile and catch up while social distancing outside. The meal was delicious, and I sure appreciate you thinking of me. Thanks, Tom and Dianne!
My daughter Cindy has been visiting this last week. COVID prevented us from doing our normal retail shopping and eating out, but we managed to still have a good time. She was able to visit her Aunt Ellna Roland.
