Welcome, December! The season of decorations and shopping has begun. It is so beautiful to see houses decorated with lights and wreaths. The Courthouse Square and downtown have been transformed into a land of lights and greenery. Thank you to all those that made that possible.
The Hickory Corner Community Center will hold its annual Christmas potluck dinner at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Bring your favorite dish to share. If you would like to participate in the $5 gift exchange, ladies bring a lady’s gift, men bring a man’s gift and children bring a child’s gift.
There will be a drawing for Mr. and Mrs. Santa, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph and several Elves. Also, we will be playing bingo so bring some wrapped bingo gifts. This will be a fun evening, so plan to come and enjoy great food and fellowship. All are always welcome at our center.
Our center is looking very festive! Sarah Holmes decorated our tree, and it is simply beautiful. Others that helped get our center ready for the holidays are Judy and Philip Cranford, Nancy and Donnie Patterson, Nancy and Joe Holmes, Sarah Holmes, and myself. Your support is appreciated. I have heard from many that Thanksgiving was full of family and food! I had company from Pekin, Ill., my daughter Cindy, her husband Tim and my granddaughter Makenzie. My grandson Matthew and his girlfriend Michaela came from Chicago. I sure enjoyed their visit, but I already have more company as my son Terry is spending this week with me.
As always, remember in prayer the sick and all those who have lost loved ones. God knows every problem and every need.
Bonice Martin, daughter of Robert and AG Maness, shares her Christmas story from years ago. She was six years old, and all she wanted for Christmas was a little red rocking chair. A few days before Christmas, she imagined a rocking chair rocking in the attic. Sure enough, on Christmas morning she awoke to find Santa had left a little red rocking chair under the Christmas tree along with fruits, nuts and candy. She remembers being so excited and loving that little red rocker. Bonice also said a Christmas tradition was to have a fresh coconut cake and white layered cake with white frosting and raisins sprinkled over the top and sides. Her mother would put them into the pie cabinet after baking. One Christmas morning, when her mother went to get the cakes, she screamed out, “Robert, come here. Something has eaten all the raisins off my cake.” Her mother was so upset that she began to cry. It was time for Bonice to fess up so she said, “Mommy, don’t cry. I ate all the raisins off the cake!” Bonice has many fond memories of past Christmases. We are so blessed to have our happy memories. Thanks for sharing with us, Bonice.
