Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Reminder: Hope to see all of you at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Hickory Corner Community Center for our Homecoming celebration. Do not miss out on the fun and fellowship. There will be barbeque chicken plates with baked beans, potato salad and a dessert for $10. There will also be hotdogs and chips available. Come and enjoy the cake walk, cake auction and silent auction. Wait! There is more. There will also be some antique tractors on display at our Homecoming celebration.
Members, here are some ways you can help make our Homecoming a success: ladies, get those recipes out. We need cakes for the cake walk and cake auction and also desserts to go with the plate meals. You can donate new or used items for the silent auction. We need all of you to make our Homecoming a success!
JoAnn Clayton has made many aprons for her children, grandchildren and others. Recently, she made an apron for my granddaughter, Makenzie, who loves to cook. Makenzie is a fifth grade teacher who lives in Illinois. She will be so excited to get this apron. Thanks, JoAnn!
When I think about an apron, I think of my Grandma Ellen Greene. When we were kids, my sister Mildred and I spent time at our Grandma and Grandpa Greene’s house. Grandma always wore a long dress with a long apron over it. The apron protected what few dresses grandma had. She made her dresses and aprons on an old Treadle sewing machine. The apron had a pocket on it where she kept her snuff box. The apron not only protected her dress when cooking but had so many more uses. I remember she used her apron to carry eggs, carry firewood and carry vegetables from the garden. The apron also was used as a hot pad when removing hot pans from the stove. I just wonder if the younger generation even uses an apron when cooking?
April showers bring May flowers. When Donna, my niece from Illinois, hears this phrase she thinks of her grandma Ovie Spencer Hemby who lived on Highway 100 West near Chickasaw.
Donna said her grandma planted large beds of petunias and large zinnias in the middle of the beds. When you drove down highway 100, it was a lovely sight. Precious memories how they linger.
