When Don’s mother died Dec. 8, 2002, the ride to the City Cemetery was silent except three soft words by Travis – “The Last Mile.”
Our community expresses sympathy to these grieving families as they recall walks taken together. Families are of Dorothy Nell Robbins Latham (3-31-29 to 6-13-20) – New Friendship; Bertie Lee Hollowell Bishop (4-16-20 to 5-28-20) – Memorial; John Michael Phillips (12-1-56 to 6-12-20), served in US Navy – Memorial – New Friendship; Larncine Gail Pusser (5-19-62 to 6-11-20), daughter of Billy Kent and Mary Lee Bishop Pusser – Memorial – Cabo; “Mike” Michael G. Ross (5-28-55 to 6-10-20), the last from a family of four. Coy, Faye and Anthony have open arms in heaven. Mike was the beloved husband of Betty Wells Ross – Unity; “Bill” William Maness (5-1-35 to 6-15-20), my distant cousin who mowed Mama Beck’s yard so neatly. We last saw each other at the funeral home (regret not getting his cell phone – loved hearing his humor). He is the beloved husband of Mary. They lost their grandchild, Tina Leann Maness May 5, 2020 – Cave Springs; and Katherine Williams-Dunning (10-21-92 to 6-13-20), daughter of country singer, Hank Williams, Jr., died in a SUV accident.

Jacks Creek has a new business! Sunset Valley Farm Market will have veggies, fruits, etc. It is located in the space beside the post office. Hours are 3-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and noon-3 p.m. Sunday. I am craving “maters” and “taters.”
On June 20, 1782, the bald eagle was chosen as the emblem of the U.S.A. because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks. Three weeks ago, Don and I saw a bald eagle flying and landing on the side of the road across from Lonnie Cobb Ford. The beauty took my breath. Great posture, beautiful feathers groomed, alert eyes and strong looking claws. I love the bald eagle as our emblem. I love the U.S.A., Tennessee, Chester County and Jacks Creek. We are blessed to have stability, and don’t we have enough of whatever we desire within our paychecks? I would never consider leaving this country. We have the best, and many want to move here. We are blessed to be born here! Freedom – hear it ring?
Father’s Day is June 21. Make memories while you can. Give Dad a carwash coupon or do it yourself while Dad watches. Grill burgers for him and make extras for the following day or two. Who wouldn’t love homemade ice cream? Do something personal. Do not forget to take a photo and surprise him soon with that memory in a photo frame. Be mindful this is the “first” Father’s Day for several families. Pray for them. Call or send a note. This week, three Dads are gone.
