“Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.” – Loretta Lynn
No news has been reported, so names of deceased have not been listed in my column. This does not mean sympathy is not expressed. Some of you purchase an obit as a last tribute. Here are the names on my notebook: Dee Phillips; Rosalene Hill Knipper; Mattie Celeste Harville Moore; Janie Marie Smith Stewart; Gary Milton Carlton; Janie Marie Smith Stewart; Gary Milton Carlton; John Wendel Joyner; Karen Peters Johnson; Willie Alford Frye; Mary Kelley Harris; James O. Massengill; Eva Mae Hopper Whitman; Wendell Lynn Cox; David Monroe Farley; and Scott Randall Stewart. Hope no loving names omitted.
Admirers of country singer, Loretta Webb Lynn (4-14-32 to 10-4-22) remember her songs and country talk. Loretta said that city folks tried to change her talking, but it just messed up her mind, so she continued to be herself. What’s not to admire? Two of her quotes, (1) “I’m trying to lead a good Christian life, so there ain’t too much spicy to tell about me.” and (2) “I wouldn’t have dared ask God for all that He’s given me. I couldn’t have done it on my own. I thank God every day for what I have. “
Brad Caswell formerly from Chester County met Loretta Lynn. She was impressed with his Randy Travis and Conway Twitty voice sounds with their songs. She said to Brad, “Don’t sign with anyone until you’ve talked to me.” Brad called and invited Don and me to Loretta’s Dude Ranch when he performed at half-time. We were proud of him. He was my student at junior high and performed at our BBQ Festival.
Do you remember Ralph Mays and Kathy Bailey Mays dressing up for Hee-Haw at Williams Auditorium as Loretta and Conway lip-singing, “Louisiana Woman and Mississippi Man” – someone recorded it. Please make Ralph a copy – he wants it so much.
Prayer request: Carol Preuss (Loving Paws); Paul Schilling and Harold James. Ralph Mays feeling better due to Mickey and Tera’s loving attention. Greetings to Lounell Grissom Morris and Sue S. Wright. I bet Sue’s son-in-law, Sam (Crystal) Williams’s pots are ready for his famous community stew – a true labor of love.
I was ill, so I could only attend in the car at Mary Harris’s September 29 graveside service (9-30-26 to 9-23-22) at Sweetlips Cemetery. Her only child John Dennis Harris celebrated his dear mother’s life and had a last birthday cake made for her family and friends. I was so touched and cried at the joy she would have felt at such love and respect. I took a picture of my birthday slice as a keepsake. Mrs. Mary painted two pictures as gifts for me – a floral and one of Abby, Regina Brooks and my poodle. Abby is buried in the Dusty Haven, a designated area called Abby’s Place. Cute memory – eagle-eyed Mrs. Mary noticed Abby running to me. Abby left every lap to come to me. I had a secret – a hidden snack for dear Abby. Mrs. Mary never came to Regina’s shop without a hidden Abby snack. Isn’t that cute? I am gonna leave a milk bone on Decoration Day for some little deserted doggie on the base of Mrs. Mary’s monument. That would please Mrs. Mary and some little animal, too.
Be kind to precious elderly, little children and helpless animals. They all need us – we can be their voice. God is watching us.
Happy belated birthday to LaVon L. Jones and Brenda Hannah.
Geralene Thompson called from Mississippi to tell Chester County folks, especially those from Jacks Creek, she misses them greatly. Will you send a note? Call for her address at 989-7485.
Fireman will be heating up the fire to make us some good old hot stew. Preorder by calling Al (Joy) McKinnon. Stew will be ready at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29. This will not be a “witches brew” but feel free to ride in on your broom. We will load it up for you. All extra monetary donations needed and appreciated for our Jacks Creek Fire Department.
