The Silerton Fire Department Annual Bake Sale will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at the fire station and beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Bolivar Tractor Supply Store. Goodies may be purchased from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday. Call Donna Waldrip at 658-7889 if you have a special request.
Members of the Town Council and several citizens decorated the Holly Beshires park as a winter wonderland. At night illuminated deer and snowmen surround the Christmas tree in the gazebo. The pole lights throughout the town set a holiday theme with illuminated trees, snowflakes, reindeer and stars. By day, red ribbons on the town welcome signs remind everyone of the season. All this makes Silerton one of the prettiest Hardeman County towns at Christmas.
Melea Beshires volunteered to share some of her thoughts concerning the Christmas season this week. She writes, “These days you can’t leave your house without the Christmas spirit jingling all around you. You might find this spirit in the smiling person in the red apron outside the shopping mall or in the snowflake streetlights calling you home after a day of work. Perhaps you are finding Christmas cheer in a cup of peppermint mocha or in breaking out your house coat and slippers and binge-watching Hallmark movies.
Personally, with my little one about to celebrate his first Christmas, I have done a lot of thinking about what Christmas means and have become newly appreciative of what it means to everyone. For some, like my dad, it means playing Santa’s elf by hiding shiny new bicycles in the garage so that another family’s children won’t discover their Christmas surprises too early. For ones with infants, it means walking that wonderful line between decking the halls and not bedazzling the house with more choking hazards. I have laughed so much seeing Otto (my little one) rolling wrapping paper all over our living room floor and helping us open our Amazon packages completely unaware that they will be repackaged later in red and green.
This year, I’ve enjoyed seeing the array of social media pictures of children responding to Santa in different ways. Some of my favorites have been of little ones crying, while their older sibling looks straight at the camera, as if to say, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll learn. It’s all worth it.’ I hope that whatever feelings Christmas stirs or rekindles for you this year, that you, too, will take pleasure in some small, joyful moment or that an opportunity will knock and allow you to bring holiday cheer to someone who needs it.”
