Today I share two quotes about August. One for the inside dwellers and another for the outdoor types.
“Leaving any bookstore is hard, especially on a day in August, when the street outside burns and glares, and the books inside are cool and crisp to the touch.” – Jane Smiley
“It’s part of the American experience: We deal with mosquitoes in August.” – Monica Hesse
I love the first quote because it makes me want to find a good book and sit in a cool place and devour it. I have not had as much time for reading since having two children, but it is still a favorite pastime of mine. I know if you are reading this paper there is a reader in you as well! I would love to know what others are reading this time of year and what others’ pastimes are when you are not working or taking care of daily tasks. The second quote had me nodding my head because I have fought the mosquitoes all summer while trying to walk outside and let my children play outside. We must have purchased every kind of bug spray and then finally a few friends reminded me to try Avon Skin So Soft. I remember my Grandmother Bunny always kept a bottle in the kitchen by the sanitizer. Every Fourth of July she would dose us in it, and I never remember getting a single bite or welt! So far, this hack has worked great for my kids as well.
Deepest condolences to the family of Orland Tolstoy Cox. He passed away on Aug. 17. Services will be set at a later time. His cousin Willard Beshires shared the following:
“Orland Tolstoy (Cotton) Cox, a native Silertonian, moved back to Silerton after retirement (as so many have done). He was my friend my entire life, and I will greatly miss him. He was deeply into family genealogy and had accumulated massive files of research. A wealth of knowledge died with him. He and I had many adventures together. Rest In Peace, friend.”
The Lambert Reunion is approaching fast. Do not forget to attend on Sept. 4 at 12:30 p.m. at Barbara Lambert’s house. Also for those interested, there will be a town meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 20.
Hope everyone has a blessed week.
