Winter can be a challenging season even in December. With all the rain and the sickness and trying to pinch every penny to give to loved ones, it is easy to lose sight of some of the joy and beauty. I share the poem “Three Crashing Sunsets In A Row” by William Stridger this week for those who might need an extra gift. I have always believed Silerton has some of the most beautiful sunsets on earth.
“Three crashing sunsets in a row
Rose and gold and amber-glow
Somber days and dull, those three
And then three miracles had we.
Behind our hills and plains the sun
Its gorgeous tapestry had spun
Three evenings of woven gold,
Three splendid epic stories told.
Three days that were as commonplace
As dawn and noon and night in space
And then three rushing tidal flows
Of gold and crimson, fire and rose.
Like some great sea upheaved with might
Our skies have been— with rose-red light
Tumultuous, brawling, storm-toss’d form
Of clouds like mountains in sky-storms.
It is a happy place to be,
Where one may lift his eyes and see
Across the skies in afterglow
Three crashing sunsets in a row.”
As the holidays approach, I would love to share any family recipes or favorite traditions you might have. Traditionally my Grandmother Bunny will make seven types of Christmas cookies and she always says, “Seven kinds of cookies a Christmas makes!” This was a tradition my family learned from an exchange student from Norway who lived with them for a while. Pepper cookies are a beloved one of the cookies. Since my Grandmother is on a purée diet now, my cousin Whitney had the sweet idea to make a pepper cookie pudding.
