Congratulations to Pre-K and special education teacher Amanda Hunley, our East Chester Teacher of the Year! Amanda earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from UT Martin in 2013. She completed her Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership from Union University in May 2019. Currently in her seventh year of teaching at East Chester, Amanda works with our youngest students and maintains a positive attitude and smile on her face. We are very proud of her!
Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday, Jan. 17. They dressed up like they were 100 years old. They also participated in all kinds of 100 activities: puzzles to 100, writing to 100, counting sets of 10 to 100, etc. Kindergarten students also learned about the winter season and wrote about how to build a snowman.
First grade has been getting ready for our January Leader in Me assembly. First graders worked on telling time to the hour and half-hour and solving addition and subtraction word problems to 20. They learned about the three branches of government and our job as citizens, and they also learned about how our world, our country, our cities and our neighborhoods change over time.
Second grade learned how to add and subtract two and three digit numbers with and without grouping. They also began to count money. It is great practice for kids to practice counting spare change at home. They also learned about the great Western Expansion. They continued to work on their Life Cycles unit.
In third grade reading, students worked on bones and the muscular system. They learned how different body systems have to work together to make the body function correctly. In math students are worked on identifying fractions as parts of a whole and continued our work on multiplication and division fluency. Third graders will start a new unit study on weather this week. We will discuss the different weather tools, types of clouds and special vocabulary that meteorologists use. Who knows…. we may have the next Tom Meiners in our third grade class.
