The Lions soccer team (5-1, 1-1 MSC) narrowly escaped Thomas More (2-2-2, 0-1 MSC) on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory.
The match was about as even as it could get throughout the entire 90 minutes. Thomas More outshot the Lions 16-14. Calum Langdale recorded more saves than George Tidswell by two. Both teams took exactly four corner kicks.
But the main difference was on the scoreboard, when Stefan Cekic scored his team-high seventh goal on a missed-penalty rebound in the 69th minute of action.
The Lions were able to draw a foul inside the Saints’ 18-yard box, setting up Cekic to take the shot from the spot. After his penalty was saved by Tidswell, he was able to quickly react and score on the follow, putting the Lions up 1-0.
The Lions defense would hold strong for the final 21 minutes and would go on to get the first Mid-South Conference win of the season.
Langdale finished the game with seven saves in the shutout.
