American Legion Davidson-Haltom Post 157 in Henderson is pleased to announce that retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CWO5) Larry Newsom will be the Guest Speaker for this year’s commemorative program on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, in the council chambers on the second floor of Henderson City Hall in Henderson.
CWO5 Newsom served 33 years in the United States Army & Army National Guard, mostly as a helicopter pilot. His tour in Vietnam included over 200 flights as a Dustoff (medivac) pilot. He has two Legions of Merit and numerous other awards and over 12 years of foreign service around the world.
CWO5 Newsom will be seen as a colonial soldier to honor an ancestor of his, Private Henry Medlin. Serving under famed General Nathaniel Green, Private Medlin served with distinction in the 10th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line during the Revolution.
This year’s commemoration titled “The American Revolution: The enormous price paid 1775 – 1783” specifically remembers the horrendous cost in Colonial America lives and treasure to gain our freedom 250 years ago and honors all military veterans who willingly made the Supreme Sacrifice to safeguard the United States of America. The public is encouraged to attend the approximately one-hour ceremony.
