Alma Ann Morrison, 89, left her earthly home in the early morning hours of May 26, 2023. Surrounded by her family, she joyously joined her Savior—the one she had devoted her life to so long ago.
Funeral Services were 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, at Cave Springs Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
The family received friends on Saturday, May 27, at Shackelford Funeral Directors Crook Avenue Chapel from 5-8 p.m. and then from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the church.
She was born, raised, lived and died within a quarter mile radius in the Hickory Corner community. She was born on May 22, 1934, to the late Joe Clifford and Mary L.E. Burkhead Garner.
In 1950, she married the love of her life, James Robert Morrison. They made their home in the Hickory Corner community, where she faithfully labored to provide for her family. She and James devoted their lives to the farm, and they were proud of the legacy they built one acre at a time. She could be found wherever James was, whether it be on the church pew or on an International tractor. They built a beautiful family, and they were proud of their children: James Robert, Jr., Bill, Betty, Steve and Anita.
She was devoted to her family, her community, her church and her Lord. She was a faithful member of Cave Springs Baptist Church for over 75 years. She was committed to serving in the church and in the Hickory Corner and Montezuma communities. You could find her at every Community Center event, baking cakes, cooking food and volunteering. Her coconut cakes were always best sellers at fundraisers, usually bringing in more than $125 per cake. She not only made the most delicious coconut cakes; she also was known for her fried pies and peanut brittle. Her deserts were sweet, but her heart was sweeter. She loved her family and was loyal to her friends.
In addition to farming, she loved being a member of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors and the Red Hatters Women’s Club and volunteering at the Gleaner’s House. No matter what she was involved in, she gave it her best. She did not believe in doing something if you were not going to commit to it wholeheartedly. Her life displayed her wholehearted commitment to her Savior. She believed that we all preach our own funeral before we die, and she preached a good one. She leaves behind a host of family and friends who love her dearly. Since James’ death in 2000, it had been her desire to join him in heaven. Their souls were connected in a beautiful way for nearly 50 years, and they have now been reunited once again. She will be greatly missed on this side of eternity, but she has finished her journey. She’s now walking in the High Cotton of glory, farming every hillside of Heaven with James.
She is survived by her children, James Robert (Faye) Morrison, Jr., Bill Morrison, Betty (Anthony) Cooper, Steve (Deonna) Morrison and Anita (Danny) Wade; seven grandchildren, Michael Morrison, Kristy (George) Gaffney, Mark Cooper, Mandy (Jake) Futch, Matthew Cooper, Macy Morrison and Seth Wade; eight great-grandchildren, Garrett Hathcock, Riley Hathcock, Maliah Maness, Mattie Maness, Kylie Cooper, Mason Cooper, Tailynn Morrison and Sawyer Cooper; and her siblings, Alfred Garner (Jo Ellen) and Peggy Whitman.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jessie Lee Rowland; and the love of her life, James.
