April floods in with wide-spread severe weather

The US experienced extreme spring weather last week, with tornado warnings from Texas to Wisconsin followed by flooding and even evacuations for some areas.
Chester County responded immedi-ately when Selmer and McNairy County was hit by a damaging EF-3 tornado in the early hours of Thursday, April 3. Nearby Adamsville also sustained damage. Besides an undetermined amount of property damage, a number of lives were taken by the storm, in Selmer and across the country.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with the community collecting items for the tornado victims and responders as well as volunteering at collection sites and in rescue and clean-up. All requested donation items except clothing may be dropped off at the Henderson Fire Department at 505 Sanford St. A current list of needs is updated daily on the McNairy County Ag Center Facebook page. The Chester County Independent will continue to report on this event as needed.
Flood waters rose in Chester County throughout the five-day storm surge, but most areas receded quickly. The Chester County Highway Department assessed the flood damage as they were able and quickly began clearing and repairing, restoring the roadways.
