Last week, the Chester County High School Eagles Soccer team competed in regionals and sectionals. The week started with an extremely intense game versus Fairview on Tuesday that went into 13 PKs, but No. 13 Tanner Melugin of the Eagles was able to kick the final PK that would advance them to the region championship. During the championship, the Eagles came out on top again against Sycamore with a score of 1-0 with the score credited to Melugin on an assist by Chris Wilger.
Unfortunately, during sectionals, after going into their second overtime game of the week, the Eagles lost during PKs, 5-4, vs Hume-Fogg. The Eagles Soccer team fell just shy of returning to state this year.
Nonetheless, Head Coach Bobby Helton said that that he could not be more proud of his seniors and the team as a whole.
“This senior class....We’ve gone to state. We won district a couple different times. We won region twice, and we’ve had so many firsts in this program’s history because of this senior class. They’ve been a huge part of making that happen. I’m so proud of every one of them. They have done everything I have ever needed them to and I’m just super proud.”
Helton continued, “This season has been so up and down. The first of the season we couldn’t find ourselves. Part of that was on me because I could not figure out our rotation trying to find people in the right spots. I think when we did a better job of that late in the season we really started improving our level of play, and I think that showed. How many teams in the state can say that they were at the state tournament last year and they made the section game this year? I can tell you that out of the 16 teams that played today, four were at the state tournament last year and we were one of those.”
