Chickasaw State Park regularly provides fun informational, hands-on activities geared toward kids of all ages. Events scheduled for the upcoming weekend include the following:
Thursday, June 12
Hashi the Kingsnake, 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. – Meet at the Camp Store by the beach to learn about Hashi the Kingsnake. Registration is not required.
Raptor Lunch, 11 a.m. to noon – Get a front row seat for Chickasaw State Park’s resident raptors’ lunch at the aviary across from the Park Office. You will meet a barred owl, red-tailed hawk and red-shouldered hawk. Registration is not required.
Nature Suncatcher Craft, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Meet at Shelter Seven, by the beach, to make a suncatcher with leaves and plants found at the park. Registration is required and costs $2 for supplies. Program will be moved to the Camp Store if weather is poor.
Friday, June 13,
Homemade Firestarter, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. – Meet at Shelter Seven to make fire starters with egg cartons. Registration is required and costs $5 for supplies. Program will be moved to the Camp Store if Shelter Seven is rented or if weather is poor. Check the Chickasaw State Park Facebook page for updates.
Meet and Greet Jack, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Meet Jack, the barred owl, at the aviary and find out why he is at the park. Learn interesting facts about barred owls. Registration is not required. Program will be moved to the Camp Store if weather is poor.
Clay Bolws and Plates Craft, 2:45-3:45 p.m. – Meet at Shelter Seven to make a small plate and bowl out of air-dry clay with leaf imprints. Registration is required and there is a cost of $4 for supplies. Program will be moved to the camp store if weather is poor.
Camp Music of the Civil War, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Meet at the amphitheater opposite the RV Campground to learn about music’s role during the Civil War and hear camp songs played on violin. Program is free, but registration is strongly recommended. Bring water. Wooden bleachers are available, but visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
Saturday, June 14
What’s Jack Been Eating? 11 a.m. to noon – Meet at the aviary across from the Park Office to dissect an owl pellet and see what Jack, the barred owl, has been eating. Program is free, but registration is required as there are limited spots available. Program will be moved to the camp store if weather is poor.
Meet and Greet Jack, 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. – Meet Jack, the barred owl, at the aviary and find out why he is at the park. Learn interesting facts about barred owls. Registration is not required. Program will be canceled if weather is poor.
Hashi the Kingsnake, 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. – Meet Hashi the Kingsnake at the Camp Store. You will learn about Hashi and some of Tennessee’s native snakes. Registration is not required.
Brewer’s Cabin Tour, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Music 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Meet at Brewer’s Cabin for a short tour followed by a program of traditional folk music on violin and history of the hillbilly genre. Bring a lawn chair and park in the old restaurant parking lot across from the cabin. Water and bug spray is also recommended. This program is free but registration is strongly recommended. Program will be rescheduled for a later date if weather is poor. Check Facebook for updates.
