Chickasaw State Park regularly provides fun informational, hands-on activities geared toward kids of all ages. Events scheduled for the upcoming weekend include the following:
Friday, July 18
Awesome Atlatl, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. – Meet at the archery range near the tennis courts to learn about the history of the atlatl and how to throw one. Program is free, but registration is required. It will be rescheduled if weather is poor. Registration closes at noon July 17.
Cord Making – 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. – The traditional skill of weaving cord/rope from natural fibers is not only fun, but also a useful ability. Meet at the Camp Store near the lake to learn the history behind rope weaving and make one for yourself! Registration is required and costs $2 for supplies. Registration closes at noon July 17.
Meet at the boat docks at 8:30 p.m. to watch the sunset on Lake Placid. Cost is $15 per person, spots are limited.
Saturday July 19
Meet and Greet Hashi, 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Although Chickasaw is home to many snake species, Hashi is not native to here or Tennessee. Meet near the boat dock to find out how Hashi ended up at Chickasaw and interesting facts about him. Registration is not required, program will be moved to the camp store if weather is poor.
Corn Husk Dolls, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Dive into the lives of the early settlers and Native Americans as we learn how to make dolls from natural materials. This is a great way to mix history with the present, as we see that even so many years ago, toys were still as popular as they are now. Registration is required and costs $2 for supplies. Registration ends at noon July 18.
Sunday July 20
Meet and Greet Jack, 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. – Did you know barred owls are native to Tennessee? What else might you not know about them? Swing by the Aviary to meet Jack, our barred owl, and learn all sorts of interesting facts about him. Registration is not required. Program will be canceled if weather is poor.
Birds of Prey Feeding, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. – Come by the Aviary for the feeding of our birds of prey and learn facts about them you may not have known. Registration is not required. This is a rain or shine program.
