Hello to everyone! First things first, let us thank the Lord for allowing us to see another week and another month. September has made its arrival. I pray and hope you had a great week. As we go through this day, let us remember that today is the day the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it! I am so sorry that I did not have a column in the paper last week. Please forgive me! I was just tired and took some time off. I spent some time with my family and did not do anything extra.
Well, Labor Day weekend is here. Labor Day basically marks the end of summer, so it is a holiday that is bittersweet for me. But that just means we have fall to look forward to! Plus, the reason behind observing Labor Day is so patriotic. Labor Day is to honor the hard workers and recognize their contributions to society. Did you know the first Labor Day parade was held in 1882 in New York City? Two years later, the Knights of Labor adopted a resolution that the first Monday in September be considered Labor Day. The idea quickly spread across the country. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 and continues to be celebrated with parades and family reunions.
Labor Day is a time when so many come home to visit with their families and friends and have family reunions. A time to get away, take time off work and enjoy family and friends. Oh, how my mind goes back to those days in Jacks Creek when we had our big barbecue and family reunion when everyone came home. I remember Mr. Cawthon and his son, Mr. Rayford Cawthon, cooking the best barbecue in Chester County! When Mr. Cawthon had 40 hogs (or more) to cook, he would hire Mr. Bill Howard and Ralph Thomas to help. They had special recipes that no one can repeat. The first Saturday in September was and still is a special day for us. During that time, we would not worry about anything. It was a happy time for the families and friends to come together to see loved ones that we have not seen in years. In all, that gives us every reason to celebrate!
Well, on Aug. 31, the son of Audria Dunn and Darrin Dunn celebrated two years of marriage! Edward and Angel are still very happy with other! According to Google, the two-year wedding anniversary is traditionally called the Cotton Anniversary. It symbolizes comfort, strength and adaptability in a relationship that has moved beyond the initial excitement of marriage and is settling into a deeper, more enduring bond! To the couple, the city of Henderson would like to say happy anniversary. We pray that Edward and Angel will have a blessed life together and many more anniversaries! Like I always say, keep the honey in the moon!
Happy Birthday to my very own daughter-in-love (we do not believe in daughters-in-law!), Raphi Holiday on Aug. 27. Raphi is such a wonderful mother to my grandbabies and outstanding wife to Frank, Jr., my son!
The City of Henderson would like to say happy belated birthday to one of the best Directors in the world! Mr. Gary Gober, the Head Start Director, celebrated his birthday on Aug. 23. We pray that the Lord will bless all of you with many birthdays to come!
Mother Geneva Burton would like to invite her family, friends and the community to join her at Harvest Time Church of God in Christ, at 417 Beechwood St, Henderson, for Sunday School, starting at 10 a.m. The teacher is Elder William Burton! Come and enjoy!
Last but not least, PLEASE come out to your/our local county and city meetings if you want to know what is going on in the City and County! I would love to see more of my African/Black Americans and Hispanic family and friends attend these meeting. It is your right to know what is happening in our city. Hope to see you soon because you do matter! One thing I do know is that Jesus loves all of US.
On the prayer list this week: the Croom family. Pray for our loved ones that are in the hospitals, for the ones that are sick in their homes, for our children, teachers and families, for the men and women that are serving our country and also for the incarcerated. Remember to patronize with our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can.
If you live in the City of Henderson and have news about your family, birthday, anniversary, announcements, and things happening in the City, I need to hear from you. Text me at 608-6132. You may call and leave me a message. I would like to thank the ones that call and email me with your news. Keep it up and send me more!
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: In place of expectations, Jesus gives us invitations. He tells us, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). You are Going to Be Okay!
I hope everyone will have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend. Have fun and be safe! LOVE YOU!
