Hello to everyone! First things first, let us thank the Lord for allowing us to see another week. September is making its arrival. I pray and hope you had a great week. As we go through this day, let us remember that today is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
Well, it is here. Labor Day weekend basically marks the end of summer, so it is a holiday that is bittersweet for me; however, that just means we have got fall to look forward to! Plus, the reason behind observing Labor Day is so patriotic; it honors the labor rights that Americans have worked hard to achieve. In all that gives us every reason to celebrate! It is a time when so many of our family and friends come home to visit with their families and friends and have family reunions. A time to get away, take time off of work and enjoy family and friends.
Six decades ago, an estimated 250,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in the nation’s capital. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech that day, on Aug. 28, 1963. I was only nine years old and remember sitting around the television; it was the time when we only had three channels. Now, we have hundreds of channels. Oh, how things have changed with the telvision, but what about the dream?
On Saturday, Aug. 26, I took a little drive from Henderson to a small place we know as Montezuma to visit the Community Center. The breakfast I had was not small at all. It was a BIG country breakfast. Those nice sweet ladies were filling my plate with bacon, sausage gravy over biscuits (I had two!) and a fried pork chop. Oh! And do not forget the scrambled eggs! Yes, it was worth the drive. Thank you, ladies, for the good food, but most of all for your loving hospitality.
On a very sad note, our condolences go out to so many families this week. You may know some of them, but I knew them all. I remember when Ms. Nancy Kinchen worked at Miller’s Big Star grocery store. I grew up with Mrs. Gladys Bond’s children. I knew Mr. Ronald Talbott through his son, John Talbott, and Mr. Anthony Connor was one of my classmates. Yes, we are sad for the loss of our loved ones, and they will surely be missed, but we are thankful for the time we had and all the happiness and good times they shared. Always remember that nothing will ever take away our memories. To all of the families, may your memories be ones that give you comfort and peace. Our prayers are with you.
Let us also remember our soldiers who died while participating in a live-fire training exercise at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County last Friday, Aug. 25. Camp Pendleton was my first duty station in 1974. Keep all of our armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard) in prayer. Remember their families all over the world.
On the prayer list this week is the Croom family, Steve and Ethel, the Bond family, the Arnold family, the Kinchen family, the Talbott family and Michael Pirtle, who is still in the hospital.
I hope everyone will have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend. Have fun, be safe and let someone know how much you love them!
Thought for today: You are cared for more than you know, more than you see, so are the people in your life. You can be sure God knows all needs, and He already has a way and a plan to provide for each one!
Remember to patronize with our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can.
