City to hold public hearing prior to budget vote

The City of Henderson Board of Mayor and Aldermen will meet tonight (Thursday) in regular session in the upstairs council chamber of the city hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
A public hearing will be held concerning the 2025-2026 proposed budget prior to the board’s vote to finalize the budget.
The new budget is based on the city receiving $5.8 million in revenue while expenses will total $8.1. The budget deficit will come from the city’s fund balance accounts in the amount of $2.4 million. This reduces the fund balances from $5.6 million to $4.2 million.
The budget was approved on the first reading at the board’s May meeting. Approval is expected on the second and final reading at tonight’s meeting.
Board members will also discuss an ordinance amending the municipal zoning regulations pertaining to the definition of “tiny houses.”
The current ordinance states that “such residential structures (under 800 square feet in size) fashioned from previously purposed structure, such as storage containers, grain bins, water tanks, train boxcars, or other similar structures shall be considered tiny houses.”
The proposed ordinance does away with this description.
Other items on the agenda include:
• consider a resolution approving the 2025-2026 operations and capital expenditure budget for the water/sewer fund and natural gas fund.
• consider an ordinance amending the 2024-2025 (current year) budget to account for ongoing grant proposals and other line-item overruns.
• discuss and consider approval of repairs needed to water well No. 6.
• discuss and consider approval of the fees adopted related to zoning and subdivision regulations.
• discuss a request from the fire department to approve a policy for an employee stipend for collateral assignments.
• consider approval of the purchase of a new patrol car on the state contract from Lonnie Cobb Ford.
• discuss and consider a quote received on sealing the maintenance shop roof.
• update the board members on the status of the fire department door renovations to allow the new ladder truck to fit inside the fire stall.
The meeting is open to the public.
