COMMUNITY NEWS - JANUARY 16, 2025

Posted

The snow is slowly leaving. It sure was beautiful, falling and covering everything. It looked like a winter wonderland in Deanburg. I heard someone measured the snow to be seven inches, but since it was so heavy, it would have been more. A lot of people got an extra day off work, and there were school closings, not just our county but all neighboring counties and states. The community club met Tuesday night with a few members. We sure would like more people to attend. We only meet once a month at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. If you need to rent the building, you can contact Shane Burkeen at 608-7262. Shane and Tina Burkeen recently went to Charleston, S.C., to visit Emma Gilbert in the Navy. Cora Talbott had a fire in her home recently. She wishes to express her heartfelt gratitude to all who came to help. There were a lot of first responders and friends. She was very touched by the concern shown by everyone. Continue to pray for the ones in the hospital and who are grieving for the deceased. Please call 731-988-5122 with any announcements or news. Until next time, take care!

I had the pleasure of attending another Silerton City Council meeting this past week. It was an honor to see Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse swear in the council. Though it was a very short, simple, modest and unpretentious ceremony, I was surprised to find myself moved and humbled by it. I found it to be a classic embodiment of small-town American democracy in action. I found myself asking what my grandfather and father would think of me being there to witness it so many years after they both passed. There was a short Q&A with Mayor Pulse discussing the future of Silerton, the convenience center, rules of governance and how taxes are treated by the state and county. For example, property taxes mostly go to the school system. Transportation taxes support county and state roads.
For the future of Silerton’s self-governance, it is strongly requested that you consider running for office if you live in the city limits. With its small and aging population, Silerton needs residents to step up and give a hand in serving. The date of taking down the remaining Christmas decorations will be determined. Volunteers to help would be most welcome.

Hello to all from this little corner of the world. The sun was out on Sunday, and the skies were blue. The birds are feeding as usual. We had five inches of snow in the front yard and six inches in the back. James scooped out a small path for Pepper to venture out, but Pepper was not too sure about it. He is 13 now, and I do not blame him. We took several pictures of the area around us, and it was beautiful to see the snow-laden trees. God creates beautiful masterpieces. Now, the snow is melting and will be messy, but even then, the water produced will be soaked up by the ground. The temperatures will not be too bad during the day, but we will continue to have some very cold nights. I know the kiddos enjoyed being out of school and many had fun in the snow, throwing snowballs, sledding and building snowmen. Jeremy was off, and he pulled Braelyn and Laiken around in the snow. Some made snow cream, and some made s’mores. We made a little snow cream, but I am the only one that ate any. We had potato soup and cornbread for supper. I hope everyone had a safe, uneventful time off with the snow. Condolences to all who have lost loved ones. Please pray for those affected by the fires in California. Happy birthday to James Webb and Eva Jones, 1-13, and Carolyn Whitley, 1-18.
Prayer requests for Wesley Bates, Paula Berry, Judy Bray, Georgia Burkeen, J.T. and Jeanette Butler, Jackie Chambers, Rickey Clayton, Myra Davis, James Ellis, Joie Freeman, Joey Harris, LaDawn Hayes, Danny Hodges, Brenda Hopper, Alvin and Eva Jones, Sue Lewis, Mark Lenow, Doris McKinney, Martha Mainord, Jeff Mays, Deana Morris, Darryl Newsom, Jim Newsom, Julia Parchman, James Parrish, Trudy Powers, Pam Priddy, Ridge Ray, Todd Rencher, Donald Rowlett, Mollie Russell, Brenda Seaton, Dyke Sells, Cathy Sisson, Penney Sparks, Jacob Thomas, Kevin Thurman, Tony Tucker, Cammi Walls, Charles Wray and Mike Young. Also, remember our first responders, military, firefighters and law enforcement officers. “Alone” by Diane Ranker Riesen – “If you feel so alone right now/or grieving one you love/I’m sure you wish your arms could reach/and grab them from above/I also have that feeling/and sometimes things seem low/I close my eyes and call for God/to “reach me” in my ‘soul’/I believe God has a greater plan/and knows how we cry/I’ve realized that on this earth/I’ll never know quite ‘why’/It’s FAITH that lifts me when I’m lost/It’s TRUST that keeps me strong/But, while I’m here and missing them/it’s going to feel so ‘wrong’/When you are aching deeply/And your heart seems broke in two/There’s not a lot of comfort/but, I’ll tell you what “I” do/I close my eyes in silence/and I reach deep in my soul/And then I wait for strength from God/to fill the empty hole/I know it will be just the same/like now/But, I believe God hurts for me/and wants to show me how/To honor all my loved ones/for the moments that we shared/And through my thankful heart and joy/they’ll know how much I cared.” I pray you all have a wonderful week and may it be filled with love, joy, peace and blessings. Remember: if you have news, please email me at mimmiepots@gmail.com. I would truly appreciate any news. People from here and those who have moved from our area but still want to keep in touch through the newspaper are hungry for news from home. Until next week, Happy Trails to You.

Hello from Enville! I hope you all are having a great week. January is already half gone. Time is going by fast in this new year! I hope everyone enjoyed the snow; it was beautiful. I saw lots of snowmen, sleds and folks out having fun playing in it. We still have quite a bit hanging around in spots. I sure hope it is not waiting on another one; as for me, we have had it. I am done! I think the weather forecasters are saying more is to come. It is too cold, so I am ready for warmer temperatures! School was out again Monday because the backroads were still icy; hopefully, the sunshine will melt it all away. Monday, Jan. 20, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January each year. King was chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. There will be gatherings and ceremonies with speeches remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. The Enville Community Club held their first meeting of 2025 with a soup/chili, sandwiches and dessert meal. There were several in attendance; although, there were some out because of sickness. We hope everyone will be at the February meeting. We have good food and fellowship and make plans for the betterment of our community. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday night of each month. Happy birthday wishes go to Lynda Milford on Jan. 22 and Patti Ivy on Jan. 23. We hope you all enjoy your special day! Please pray for the family and friends of Emily Freeman and all who have lost loved ones. Continue prayers for Harold and Janice Maness, Robert and Linda Johnson, Jeremy Crowell, Mary Lee Guyon, Mary Lou Avent, Robert Smith, Karl Starnes, Ann Pugh, Shirley Hampton, Della Mixon, Kaye Killingsworth, Shirley Bishop, Janice Massengill Strickland, James Vinson, Jimmy Robertson, Jeff Finley, Glenn Butts, Gene Hanna, Rick Ooley, Mike Pugh, Mike Finley, our firefighters, first responders, law enforcement, healthcare workers, military, schools and school board, our county, country and, as always, each other. If you want to rent the community center, call Pat Cates at 688-5125 or 315-8062, or if you have news, events or someone to add to the prayer list, call me at 608-3058.
Have a blessed week everyone!

I am sure the children loved being out of school for snow days. I do not know what the official total snowfall was for Henderson, but it was a lot of snow for this area. My family moved back to Chester County back in 2003, and I feel like it was one of the biggest ones since that year, but who knows? I need to take time to research that one. With all the cold weather we are having, please be mindful of pets that are outdoors and any elderly living by themselves during this extremely cold weather. This is a time to be able to make a difference for someone you know that may struggle with paying their heating bill or just need a hot meal. Our local governmental meetings need more community support. If you care about Chester County, please pay attention to what is taking place in our county and come out to commission meetings and show your interest or concerns. Everyone should be mindful of what is going on in our county and care enough to help make a difference. Montezuma sends out Happy Birthday wishes to Michael Barclay and Jeanette Bolton on Jan. 17, Jimmy Dyer and Marie Mitchell on Jan. 19 and John Clyde Moore and Billy Priddy on Jan. 20. Montezuma sends out Happy Anniversary wishes to Jake and Autumn Brown on Jan. 23. We appreciate all our members at the center and would love for more of our community to get involved. With more help, we could plan more events for our community. Membership dues are $25 after your first initial year of joining, and they are due for this current year. Membership dues need to be paid now to be considered an active member. We also take donations. Payments can be mailed to Edith Sills at 4475 Sunshine Rd, Henderson, TN 38340. Call Ann Moore at 608-2033 or myself if you have any new ideas for the center or wish to get involved. People who want to rent the community center should contact Betty Cooper at 879-9078 for booking. We ask those renting our facility to please follow our rules and show respect for the building. We try to keep it in the best order possible, and it takes everyone cooperating to make that happen. If you care about this community, please get involved in what is taking place to continue to grow our county and make it a better place to live and raise a family. Get to know what is changing in our local government, schools, churches and communities through the news, friends, your church, teachers, etc., and if it matters to you, there are ways to help make things better. There is much spiritual warfare with society accepting things that go against who God is and what HIS laws are that we are to follow. Every day of life has its challenges, but if we look to God for the right path, it can be a good one. Enjoy what time you have with your creator, your family and your friends. Please be in prayer for our local and federal government, law enforcement, school staff, teachers and the listed individuals of Dober Dyer, Brenda Hannah, Donna Doyle, Mike Lott, Linda Hopper, Cindy Kilzer, Quinten Johnson, Jerry Fletcher, Curtis Morrison, Renee Jordan, Ruby Hannah, Donnie Brooks, Linda Plunk, Mike Tedford, Sherry Fletcher, Chuck Beacham, Sandra Lott, Faye Crouse, Janice Morris, Jeanette Walker, Paul Schilling, Nancy Crouse and others that are sick or healing. We especially want to remember the families of Bobbie Sue Edwards, R C Hopper, Glen Dorsey Keller, Lisa Hames and other families that have recently lost loved ones. With new leadership taking the seat in January, we can pray that God’s hand will be in decisions made about our country going forward to help our economy and the taxpayers of this country. I am always looking for noteworthy news to share in this column. Please send to gaylescox1977@gmail.com or text me at 608-2857. As always, until next time, I am wishing a very blessed week to all you readers!

Greetings to the People of Chester County everywhere. For this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! Well, the Lord has blessed you and me to see another new week. Each and every day, I am so thankful for how the Lord is watching over us. As we pray, remember the ones who are having a hard time because of what is going on in their life. I can remember how this time last year our daughter LaWanna was wearing her life vest for her heart. Every day, her heart is getting stronger only by the healing power of the Lord. Yes! We stood on the word of God and trusted Him. Isaiah 53:4-5 reads, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (KJV). I want you to know our daughter has healed and is doing wonderful. To God be the Glory. Someone reading this column knows what I am talking about! The snow we received on Friday was so beautiful, and I am enjoying the cold weather! My husband and I saw so many snowmen – all different sizes. Thank you, Lord, for the snow; it was so beautiful falling from the sky.  Most of us will enjoy the day off from work and school on Monday, Jan. 20, for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Dr. King was an influential American civil rights leader. He was an advocate of nonviolent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He is most well-known for his campaigns for racial equality in the United States and to end racial segregation on public transport, and his most famous address was the “I Have a Dream” speech. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis. We will not allow the dream to die! There will not be a big parade or a big celebration here in the city on that day; however, he walked tall in what he believed in! Happy Birthday to Glenda Jewell on Jan. 20 and Jackie Herron on Jan .22. We pray the Lord bless you with many more.  On our prayer list this week, pray for all of our children, teachers and families, for the sick and shut in, for our men and women that are serving our country and also for the incarcerated.  To the people of Henderson, remember to patronize our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can. If you live in the City of Henderson and have news about your family, birthday, anniversary, announcements, and things happening in the City, please email me at gloria__holiday@msn.com with the subject “NEWS FOR THE CITY.” You can text me as well at 608-6132!
LOVE YOU! HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
