Fred Thomas Brown, 81, of Sparta, passed away peacefully on Jan. 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by faith, love and generosity. He chose cremation and no public service. The family plans to have a private memorial service in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the TTU Child Development Lab, 200 W. 10th Street, Cookeville, TN 38505. The family extends special and heartfelt thanks to Dawn West, Pat Christiansen, Dr. Gabino Maza, and the entire staff of the Sparta DaVita Dialysis Clinic for their exceptional care, compassion, and friendship over the past seven years. Fred held each of you very dear and was deeply grateful for the love and support you showed him.
He was born on March 28, 1944, in Childersburg, Ala., to the late James and Rintha Brown.
He was a devoted father whose life was marked by hard work, steadfast dedication and an unwavering commitment to providing for those he loved. A trailblazer in the world of technology, he possessed a quiet brilliance and a gift for problem-solving, generously sharing his knowledge and enriching the lives of many through his insight and patience.
He and Charlene shared a lifelong love that began while they were attending Lipscomb University. They were married on June 5, 1965, beginning a partnership grounded in faith, devotion and mutual respect. Their marriage was a steady and enduring bond, marked by deep affection and shared purpose. Even after Charlene’s passing, he carried her memory with him – speaking of her with tenderness and holding her close in his heart.
He lived a life deeply rooted in his faith in God and guided by genuine love for his family. He was known for his kind heart, quiet strength, and willingness to give of himself without hesitation. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his compassion and the way he made others feel valued and cared for.
Fred’s life was a testament to faith, perseverance and love, and he will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.
He is survived by his children, James (Cindy) Brown of Sparta, Tonya (Billy) Sweat of Lynchburg, Va., Martha (Jeffery) Howard of Sparta, Brenda (Philip) Wyatt of Nashville and Lynn Brown of California; his brother, Paul Brown of Lynchburg, Va..; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlene Brown; his parents; and his brother, Robert Vernon Brown.
