Governor Bill Lee has appointed Katie Moore of Henderson to a three-year term on the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities, representing the Southwest Tennessee development district.
The Council on Developmental Disabilities is a state government agency that works to improve services and supports to make life better for people with developmental disabilities and their families. “Having learning disabilities and being part of Partners in Policymaking in 2022-2023 got me involved in the disability community,” Moore said. “I’m excited to use my voice to help more people speak up and be heard.” “I learned about the Council on Developmental Disabilities during my Partners in Policymaking class last year. As an appointed member, I am especially interested in addressing airplane issues for people with wheelchairs, expanding job opportunities for people with disabilities, and improving how doctors listen to those with invisible illnesses and disabilities.” Moore is actively involved with several organizations, including the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Advisory Committee and Tennessee First Council. She hosts a Bible study on Discord and participates in special needs dance classes. Her hobbies include swimming, yoga, and creating art. “I love doing PowerPoint presentations and getting people involved in the community,” Moore said. “When I’m not advocating, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and my emotional support cat, Twix.” Moore will meet with the full Council on Development Disabilities quarterly in Nashville and will serve as a representative in the local community. Her role will connect the Council’s statewide work to the needs in Henderson and surrounding counties. The Council on Developmental Disabilities’ work focuses on building bridges between the experiences of real people with disabilities and the policies and service systems that affect their lives.
