Hello to everyone! I hope you had a wonderful week. It is a blessing to be a part of your life once again. This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it!
There is something I have not said in a long time – thank you for taking time to read the Chester County Independent. It may not be The New York Times or The Washington Post, but it is ours, and I am so thankful for it. This hometown newspaper keeps us connected to what is happening in our community, and I appreciate the hard work of the Chester County Independent team.
Monday, Aug. 11, marked the first day of classes for all seven counties served by the Head Start program – Chester, Decatur, Hardin, Hardeman, Haywood, Henderson, and McNairy. There is nothing quite like the first day of school – the excitement, the anticipation, and sometimes a few tears. Our three- and four-year-olds step from their mothers’ arms into classrooms full of new faces and new experiences. This year, more than 300 children began this important chapter in their lives. I can still remember the first day of school for each of my children. Each was different, but the emotions were the same, joy and sadness all at once. Before you know it, they are moving from elementary to middle school to high school and then on to college. We pray for a blessed and safe school year for all Head Start students, families and staff.
I thank the Lord for our teachers here in Chester County. They truly are more than conquerors! Teachers are at the heart of the educational system, serving society in a personal and powerful way. While Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated in May, the City of Henderson wants to take this moment to say thank you right now. Let us make it a point to do something kind for a teacher this week. To all our educators, we appreciate your hard work and dedication. Words will never be enough.
It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of a remarkable woman, Dr. Elizabeth Saunders. I have known her since my school days. Her father, Mr. George Saunders, was one of my teachers at Vincent High School; he was a tough but caring educator who pushed us to do our best. Dr. Saunders carried those same qualities. My last conversation with her was at my cousin Harvey Lee’s funeral. I asked if I could get her anything, and she replied with a smile, “You are so kind, but no thank you.” I told her, “If you need anything, just let me know.” I did not know then that it would be our last conversation. Dr. Saunders was the first Black student to graduate from Freed-Hardeman University. She accomplished so much in her lifetime and opened doors for many in Chester County. Let us work to keep the projects she began alive. On behalf of the City of Henderson, I extend heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. We are praying for you during this time. The dash between the day you are born and the day the Lord calls you home is important. The dash of Dr. Elizabeth Saunders spoke of service, leadership and kindness. She was a woman of many hats, and she wore them well.
The City of Henderson would like to congratulate our youngest softball team, the Chester County 5–6 Sweetees! These little Sweetees brought home the BIG WIN and are The World Series champions; even if you did not win, we could not be prouder! We are also proud of all our Chester County teams. Awesome job! Coaches, thank you for the dedication and time you pour into these young athletes. Parents, thank you for encouraging your children to participate in activities like this that build skills, teamwork and community spirit. Keep swinging for the stars, Chester County!
The City of Henderson is sending out belated birthday wishes to Brooklyn Walker, 8/7; Patricia Hardin, 8/8; Fawn Waden, 8/9; Larry Jones, 8/10; and Brianna Hunt, 8/13; Hannah Richman, 8/14; and Darlene Young, 8/15. May the Lord bless you with many more birthdays.
Remember in your prayers to pray for health: Lillian Cawthon, Amy Croom, Ethel Croom, Margaret Locke, and so many others you know. Please continue to pray for our community leaders, government officials, law enforcement, the U.S.A., the President, first responders, teachers and healthcare workers.
Remember to patronize our local businesses here in town. Let us try to support our own as much as we can.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: The safest place for our hearts is not locked away in retreat, but entrusted to the One who, in the middle of all the noise and chaos and even danger, truly understands, protects and brings restoration and healing for each new day!
