The Ingleside-Pentagon Club met on Feb. 19 in the fellowship hall of the Henderson church of Christ. Hostesses for the “Healthy Hearts” meeting were Cathy Powell and Nancy Smith. Members in attendance were Lisa Beene, Beverly Hardin, Toni Hardin, Spring McCutchen, Anita Burton, Nancy Smith, Cathy Powell, Mary Ann Guinn, Caroline Johnson, Nancy Lofton and Kay Tignor.
In honor of February being Heart Health Month, Cathy Powell introduced the guest speaker, Chris White. Chris is the chairman of the Nursing Department at Freed-Hardeman University and an associate professor of nursing. He is a retired military veteran and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He enjoys yearly medical missionary trips with nursing students from the university. Chris insists that his most important roles are husband, dad and PopPop.
Chris, specifically, spoke to the club about Women’s Heart Health since heart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the U.S. and more prevalent in the Southeast. However, he stated that 80% of heart disease is preventable. Chris continued with information, including risk factors of heart disease that we can and cannot change, good versus bad cholesterol, heart attack warning signs, the importance of movement (beginning slow and building up), heart healthy eating, getting seven to eight hours of sleep and ways to reduce stress.
Hostess Nancy Smith presented Chris with a thank you gift in appreciation for his informative presentation.
Refreshments were served by the hostesses, and door prizes were given. The tentative date for the next meeting is Thursday, March 19.
