The May 25, 2022 meeting of the Ingleside-Pentagon Club was held at Laurel’s Cottage located on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University. Hostesses were Tracie Shannon and Laurel Sewell. The welcome was extended by Tracie Shannon.
President Kay Tignor opened the meeting by reading the Ingleside and Pentagon Creeds. Old business discussed was the purchase of a Bible in memory of Dr. Ronald Johnson that was placed in the church of Christ auditorium. Dr. Johnson was a community leader and the spouse of Pentagon Club member Caroline Johnson.
New business consisted of selecting hostesses for next year’s meetings. These are as follow: October 2022 - Patsy Barber, Regina East; November 2022 - Laurel Sewell, Janis McCall, Nancy Lofton; December 2022 - Christine Carroll, Janice Kent, Becky Cyr; January 2023 - Caroline Johnson, Kay Tignor, Junie Gilliam; February 2023 - Joan Swift, Carolyn Swift; March 2023 - Ann Woods, Beverly Hardin, Judy McKenzie; April, 2023 - Dutch Treat meal; May 2023, TBA.
After the business meeting, the hostesses presented a history of Laurel Cottage. The lovely rock house was built in 1937-38 by A. M. and Nancy Johnson and purchased in 1938 by C.A. and Imogene Maness. After Mrs. Maness death, her son inherited the house. His widow Betty Maness sold the house to Freed-Hardeman in 2013.
The cottage has been renovated to serve as a guest house for visitors to the university. It was tastefully decorated by First Lady Tracie Shannon and opened for use 2022.
The cottage has five bedrooms, and the gathering room were named for First Ladies of the University: Mrs. A.G. (Cora Bell) Freed, Mrs. N.B. (Joanna) Hardeman, Mrs. H.A. (Louise) Dixon, Mrs. Claude (Delorese) Gardner, Mrs. Joe (Glenda) Wiley, Mrs. Milton (Laurel) Sewell and Mrs. David (Tracie) Shannon.
Refreshments were served, prizes were given and then the club was invited to tour the beautiful home.
